My first GS snag...

Hi people, new guy here (pleased to meet you, how do you do?)...

I seem to have a bit of a problem. I've been working on a simple shoot-em-up game, and all's been well until ten minutes ago, when GS quit, and now, even though I can open up GS, and I can see the file (1.6MB) on my desktop, the file refuses to open.

Do you have any idea what I should do? I can open other files on GS, just not this one...

Thanks for your time, it's much appreciated...

(my apologies if this is in the wrong section)

I think it's corrupted. You should have copy in your Time Machine. Otherwise, I don't think that there is a way to open it.

    Greetings! @kobayaashi

every time you lose a file …
remember you do NOT lose the know-how you learned in doing that work
… and your images/sounds are done to that point … so just import again!

in new projects with new code attempts … I usually start a new version after every facet I get working right …

@kobayaashi ... welcome .... and just to round out the excellent advice you have already received ... many here run a backup to something like the free Dropbox ... a few devs have had their systems crash or laptops stolen and all the work with it .. so its worth taking a few moments to set that up for piece of mind. Happy app making!

I am paranoid (having lost a lot of data over the years) so I...

1). Have Time Machine set up (I have the Airport with the built in HD that works nicely as a time machine device).

2). I have a secondary HD that I copy my Gamesalad projects folder to every two days.

3). I keep a backup of the project I'm working on in the same folder. I always make a copy before I start working on the project. This way if I screw something up really bad I can just revert to the version before I started that day's work.

4). I have a web storage folder for my project files, for an off-site backup.

Thank you, sir. Will have to go check. I have an alt copy saved part-way through construction, so the worst case scenario is I lose a day's work, but I guess this will teach me to back up more often...

Thanks, MotherHoose. As you say, the know-how stays, so what took me a day to put together will now be reassembled a lot more quickly!

I've learned to change my work practices - from now on, instead of merely saving, I'll do as you suggest, and start a new version when making major changes.

I'm really enjoying GS, and am glad to be a part of the community...

@JustMe74 : sometimes paranoia is just common sense to the max...

Follow-up : I reworked an earlier version, and continue to save new versions as I go, rather than merely saving the file. I've also got a version backed onto a stick for safekeeping - the lesson for me here is "don't just say you're going to back it up - back it up!"

I've had no problems with any other versions, and am still unsure as to why it happened in the first place, but hey - 'gift horse; mouth'...

Thanks again for the response, people. Speak soon.
