There is no real limit to a strong marketing campaign, their are marketing opportunities that will easily get you to the tens of thousands of dollars. The way to think of marketing is to set a budget and see what are the best opportunities within that budget, otherwise, the sky is the limit.

It sounds cliche, but one of the best things you can do for yourself to market your app is to simply make a great game. :) If people like, they are likely to spread the word without costing you a penny. Other than that, I do the very basic stuff. I submit it to some review sites, and spread the app by word of mouth a lot.

Anyways, good luck with your marketing!

Free app a day.com is one. Or any kind of free app marketing can put you out there. But it's gonna cost. I'd be careful with spending too much money , there's so much competition now on the AppStore now , it's hard to make big bucks with a 2d arcade game.

If you want to spend money of a marketing campaign - don't do it if you can't invest MINIMUM few thousands USD - otherwise it won't affect your sales appreciably.

    Very good advice.
Of course marketing is also important, but the 1st priority must be to ensure the game is good. We receive 30+ app review submissions a day and review 2 in our staff review section. As games dominate the app store, the competition is huge so a budget for marketing would be sensible. It doesn't have to be large but will increase your exposure. Getting reviews may not explode your downloads overnight but will get the word out. Promo code giveaways and forum marketing should also be part of your strategy.

In that case Freeappaday.com is in your price range, TouchArcade will change their site background for a few thousands, but without a clear plan and objective 'waste' is the right word for it.
it's hard to make big bucks with a 2d arcade game.
Agree with your other comments, but frankly, speaking for myself, I'll will pick a 2D or 2.5D game over a 3D game almost every time. Don't really like 3D mobile games, there are only few that are good. On the 2D front... Angry Birds, Tiny Wings, Cut the Rope, JetPack, and most of the other top 100 games.

100k for marketing is huge...AAA game huge.....if that's really the case for you, I'd have huge amounts of people beta test it and I'd make sure everyone in the industry has heard of your game somehow...like cut the rope or fruit Ninja

If you want to 'waste it' why not hire me at a fee, and I'll be your marketing director.
