Hi GS brothers, i'm making a game since two months and i see it will take maybe one more to finish it, i don't know if it is the average, i want to to know how long it takes you to finish a game (i know it depends of the kind of game but i would be really a good info to know). I am doing the game's art, test and code, and a partner is about to begins with the half of levels. Together we do the game logic.

Choose how long it takes you to finish your game and which kind of game is.

i have a fulltime job, and am just learning game salad, and my game concept is pretty complex and i'm making my own art, so i'm expecting several months at least.

Me it takes me 1 week to 2 months depending on the game. If is only has one level (infinity) or tones of levels.

pshh I tend to over think...so i end up changing ideas and stuff all the time in-development so it usually pushes the finish time further away...
Hi @uptimistik, how are you my tropical friend? :)

What kind of game are you doing?

@iTopGames - Frozen Finder only took about a month and a half to complete. I have another game which should be ready very soon, I've only spent about 5 hours working on it. I haven't announced it yet, but I will shortly.

My first game took a couple of months, but I was learning GS while making it. I'm still learning, but my next game I'm going to plan on paper before I begin in GS. But I hope to release it in about a month or so.

I downloaded GameSalad back in August 2010 and my game is still in development. I can sympathise with @uptimistik .... my game has taken several shapes and forms during development but that's just down to learning the tools and realising how far you can go with it. My game has only really gained focus since March this year but I don't expect to release it until close to Christmas.

I did my game "Roadtrip Bingo US" (you can search for it in the forum) in 18h from idea, design, music/sfx to final product. I did clock myself. So please add 1-3 days to the poll so i can vote ;)

For those that do it within a month, has anyone considered participating in NaGaDeMo? :)

    It depends on the project.
The longest i have spent is 4/5 months.
Shortest is about a week (when i was a newbie and rushing into making a game, many regrets)

No deadlines... game is out when it is ready.

There is only one chance to make a first impression...

Depends on the game - from one month, up to 6 months.

I'm working on a spare time. Fore my first game it will take more than two years. It is survival game with platfromer like view, but it's not platfromer. I'm sure that the second game will take me more than year to make, if its will be first person adventure, as I'm planning now.

This is like the understatement of the century. :D

And for the record it takes as long as it takes you. Its software development. Do you think game salad planned on taking 4 years before they are even close to coming out of beta. Software built on hard deadlines and timeframes will usually be forced to sacrifice. Something either quality or content. both of which are very important.

I have made a game in a week and I have made games over the course of 6 months.

Even using a paid template the changes and integration I make still can take me 8months up to a year. Part time of course.

I have a very strong distaste to developers that rush out games for the sake of having X number of games. If it makes you money, good for you. But it doesn't make you a good game developer.

still working on my first game. im 9 months in now. (prob only about 6 months of work though)

Interesting you bring that up. I bet GS uses an Agile methodology for their project management; at nearly every company I've worked at that uses an Agile methodology, it was used as an excuse for not ever delivering a final, working product. I could tell you stories to the tune of $100 million failures because of this. Of course, on the other hand, I've seen it work pretty well at certain companies (like Microsoft, for example.)

It sucks when you are a kid, you don't have time to develop and balance school. I am an honors student and all that shizz so it is hard to find time to work with GS. But I have many new games nearly finished. It may take me a few months to make a game but to make it ready for release is the part that I can never get done. I have a ton of concepts that have the code done, but no graphics or anything. Maybe I should start giving away templates ;)

It really depends on the game itself, but I mean I've spent half a year to a year working on a conceptualizing a game, and I've also built games in a few weeks.
  • dmilinovichiiidmilinovichiii Member Posts: 620
It usually takes me between a few weeks to 6 months. It just depends on how complex the game is.
