What's your policy on "borrowing" from flash games?

I got a lot of emails inviting me to play on various flash game sites. Sometimes I stumble upon a really interesting game that would look really good on the App Store. What would you do?

Not "borrowing", inspiration is great as long as it drives original creation.

I would ask the developer if it's ok to use this idea, how he want to be mentioned in credits, or how much he wants for selling me rights to use his idea.

I would probably get an idea from something and put my own twist on it, make it my own.

I have to add one thing - if the game, and idea is not original at all - I would not ask, just use it, but change everything which can be copyrighted.

Taking inspiration from the game mechanics and improving it is what I feel right now. When I play flash games I usually think that the game was good but that it would be a lot better with some modifications and improvements.
