You will need to create frame-by-frame animation for every action you want your character to perform. Some artists like to use flash for that sort of stuff but you can easily do it in photoshop, gimp, etc. The engine does not understand what walking or jumping looks like, you have to give it that information. Once you have frames for each action as well as enough frames of animation for it to look smooth, play them sequentially each time you require a certain action to take place. Here is a picture of a very basic sprite sheet, in this application there are three frames for each movement animation.
