Can you update app without losing all data?

Hey! So I updated my app, and I noticed my high score was gone because instead of "updating" what's already there, it replaces the file with a whole new one.

Is there a way to update a game without having the player lose everything?

I'm talking about the appstore. More specifically the "Play store". I updated an app on my Android tablet and it reset my high score. Is this not supposed to happen? If not, then it might have been a mistake on my part.
