Well, to familiarize myself with GameSalad, it probably took me a couple of weeks. However, that was a very basic step, and I still didn't know how to do much. To become somewhat proficient in development, it took me around 6 months. I can't exactly put into words how I got to where I am now, but "stuff" just started working. After every bug I fixed in my games, I learned something new, and never had the same bug again.
As for becoming familiar with GameSalad and how I did it, I had to stick with it! I watched a ton of youtube videos...
And started reading discussions on the forums and asking for help here and there. Overall, the best thing you can do for yourself is to stick with it, and not give up. It won't take too much time, but that 2 weeks is long enough for some people to quit.
