Help me choose new external hard drive

Hi!
My last external hard drive (TOSHIBA STOR.E ALU 2 250GB) has damaged (but honestly, it was the worst hard drive I have even seen) - I used it as a Time Machine:
1. I set up a password on the hard drive, and I had to type it everytime I plug in the hard drive - but sometimes it doesn't want to accept my password (even if it was the correct one). I had to plug it off, and then again plug it in.
2. During copying files, when I touched the hard drive or the wire, it just ejected (not literally - but it dissapeared from my hard drives, and I get an error).
3. Not sure about this, but I've noticed that when I take it to my bag (in special case), and plug in later, it showed me some errors.
4. After one of problems described in the 2 point, my hard drive has damaged. So I just opened Disk Utility, and formated it. Now copying files is super slow - I need to wait more than 1000 days to copy a little above 100 GB of files.

Not sure if this is normal for external hard drives, but I want to buy a new one. Could you suggest me any good external hard drive?
1. I want to use it only as a Time Machine.
2. I need sometimes to move it with me, so it needs to be solid (it can't just damage, or lose files everytime I touch it during copying files, or put it in my bag).
3. I don't need super big capacity - 250, or 500 GB should be fine.

Thank you very much!

I have a Seagate 1TB (I don't think it's made anymore, but they advertised it as a Mac hard drive, which just meant it was silver)
I've also got a Western Digital 2TB. They've both been fine.
For Time Machine ideally you should have at least twice the space that you're backing up.

There isn't much hidden knowledge when it comes to hard drives, and Amazon often has some of the best prices. Western Digital & Seagate seem to be the two companies that are the reliable leaders. There are better companies, but they are also expensive.

Something to remember, most people only leave reviews when they're annoyed, so if a hard drive dies after a month (which they can do, they are expected to fail at any time) they go on Amazon and leave 1 star. Still, probably best to stay away from a company you've never heard of before. Also, WD & Seagate have 3 year warranties.

I saw a network attached Storage Drive the other Day I think looked pretty good. Im seriously considering this for myself.

    http://www.amazon.com/Western-Digital-Personal-Cloud-Storage/dp/B0047FL85U/ref=sr_1_3?ie=UTF8&qid=1340464704&sr=8-3&keywords=network+attached+storage

Only real setback I see is you cannot have just a straight USB connection to the drive if you needed to take it on the road with you. So its more of a non-poratable solution.
