I've composed the soundtracks for many iOS games including Sparkle, Dragon Portals, Azkend 2 and Grim Joggers. My music has also appeared in numerous TV shows (So You Think You Can Dance, American Idol, American Horror Story, etc.) I'm currently working on the soundtrack to the indie game Owlboy by D-Pad Studio - (I created the trailer as well as the music).

I've just finished up a few large projects and have some time in the coming months to work on a few new things. As for my rates, a good estimate is around $100 per finished minute of exclusive music. $50 per finished minute for non-exclusive music (I usually offer a short window of time after your game is released before I start selling the music elsewhere).

I'd love to work some exciting new indie games so please check out my work and let me know if you're interested! Thanks for your time.

- Jonathan

Not a lot of us here will be able to afford your rates as the majority of us here are indie (indie as in 1 person) developers

I realize most people will not want to pay that much, but I have worked with some developers who are willing to invest in a good custom soundtrack. I figured it's best to just be upfront about the rates. Also, if developers are willing to pay for music then that indicates to me that their game is going to have a certain level of quality.

Hey Jonathan, nice work on the OwlBoy trailer. I've been following dev on that game for some time.

I'm a couple months away from sourcing composers, and would like to keep you in mind. Are you on twitter?

Thanks Edo_Games! I am on twitter, though I am not the most prolific of tweeters. My username there is j0nmark (with a zero as the second character).

Braid was an indie game, and had an budget around 200000$. Indie does not mean cheap. I think your trying to say that you have an hobbyist budget.

    @j0nmark
    Nice music:)

@dhondon I was tempted to to make the distinction between a hobbyist and indie, but I wasn't going to be the one to go there.
Anything worth doing is worth doing right. Spening months / years making a game and them cheaping out on music only hurts yourself and your game.

I would argue the music is just as important as your gameplay / graphics. Where would canabalt be without Danny Baranowsky?

Bothers me a bit when games with teams and budgets are refereed to as "indie" because it puts an unfair comparison on the little guy.
"pff, your indie game looks like crap compared to Braid!".
And no one wants to tell anyone that they are making a "hobby game".

Great Music I have to say but as @dhondon said I do mean hobbyist

Wow that is awesome :D I personally think $100 per minute is very cheap considering what others charge (e.g. I spoke to someone who doesn't offer music cheaper than $1000 and that's at a discount for indies!).

I will send you an email soon.

Thanks for the comments everyone. I definitely wasn't trying to disparage hobbyists or people who don't have much of a budget for music. Just looking to find a few interested developers hopefully.

Looking forward to your email Bright-Spark-Games!

I have to agree, $100 is not even close to a ton of cash for a minute of high quality exclusive music, even against an indie bugget.

    Best of luck, j0n! :)

Email sent my friend! I also definitely think $100 is a fair price per minute of exclusive music. The quality is amazing too..

    Cheers
