WordPress and GoDaddy

So my site got hacked by something in Russia, and it infected my entire database to the point a restore would not work. So I had to delete my entire database, and along with it my entire website. I looked up some stuff, and basically if you use GoDaddy and WordPress, it's not a matter of how, but a matter of when your site will be taken over. I have an App waiting for review, and now I don't have a support website for my app. I'm using my GS profile for the time being, but this is not how I operate.

I'm spending the entire weekend re-creating an entire website from scratch, and I'm switching to Joomla. There are security measures you can take to make your WordPress site more secure, but it's still not enough, and it's about 45 different things you need to do. Joomla seems to have more security features and is not as popular as WordPress, so it is not targeted as hard as WordPress. Whatever. I hate technology sometimes...

I'm in the process of switching my website over to Drupal. Photics.com used to run on WordPress, but I managed to move my content over with the migrate modules. I still like WordPress. It's a great system. Yet, my new web project needs more power. It's amazing what can be done with Drupal.

Custom Content pages and Views are like GameSalad for web development.

I'm not a fan of GoDaddy. That's a bummer that you got hacked, but it's fairly common. Did you notify your users of the breach? The more popular a website gets, the more likely it will be attacked. I run lots of websites. All day long I see attempts to ruin my sites. Sometimes it's funny... like when an automated attack is looking for software I'm not even running. Other times, it's quite unsettling.

Another nice thing about Drupal is the security review module. It runs down a list of common pitfalls for a Drupal site. The default .htaccess setting is pretty good too.

I probably should get back to work. I have a lot of updating to do.

I wouldn't host anything with godaddy way better options out there in my opinion. Also I have never used Wordpress. Always been a joomla Guy myself. I'm not like a sponsor or anything but I use SiteGround.com for my webhosting normally.

I use hostgator but I have gotten hacked just like you SlickZero. But I love hostgator since they had a backup of my site and fixed it for me. They are always helpful in chat support and fix all my problems.

GoDaddy is just too big and too popular. I'm reading it's the #1 targeted host for hackers.

I'm having to have 2 browser windows open. One opened to my GoDaddy account, and another for Googling how to navigate the GoDaddy website. Their site is ridiculous.

Updating the .htaccess file to restrict access to the non-public parts of a wordpress site can help to protect it from getting hacked.

But yeah, damn annoying when stuff like that happens.

Indeed...That's what got hacked. I found the code that re-directed users in the .htaccess file, but when I would delete the code, it would re-write itself back into the .htaccess file. So I had no idea where it was coming from, and I just deleted the whole database

Yep this is why I write my own code for my sites. I don't use Word Press or any of that nonsense as I don't see the appeal of my site looking like every other. I use straight HTML 5 and Hype to develop my sites. Never been hacked and I have my domain info unlisted.
