I registered a while back but never used gamesalad to its fullest because I was afriad since people used to bash it. I came back to using it then all of a sudden I read that gamesalad still has alot of problems. Has gamesalad improved alot or is it still a little slow. Here is what I read

The first post in the "Similar Topics" section is "Everything Sucks."
That alone should show this website is for those who have been critically depressed, have multiple personalities and have generated three or four profiles to back up their depression with a false sense of security and reassurance...

those posts are equal to saying "this paint paint set is terrible! i bought it and i still can't paint good!" and the one guy claiming to have made a 3d shooter. If thats the kind of folks you get all your life advice from, Its probably going to be a short life.

One shud choose their words carefully, for others might get influenced. If some1 thinks this way of GS, they probably also think that the earth is not round. And evolution of mankind is a hoax theory. I just cudn't help but feel sorry for those guys..

I think this shows quite clearly, that some people have very un-realistic views when it comes to what GameSalad "actually" does for you.

Like when he says "I press the attack button my opponent would punch instead of the charactor Iam controlling"

well......you obviously made the attack button, or the characters, or both, wrong then didn't you!

Deffo no need for the personal attacks on named sous chefs tho :(

The interwebs turns people into dicks at times.

My main issue with GameSalad is that it's like a sandbox. I can't bring any of my toys inside the box... or any of the toys outside of the box.

Example... I can't use GameSalad with something like this...
    http://www.electrotank.com/es5.html
    (...but I could with Unity.)

Another example... I'm currently in the process of converting my website over to Drupal. The plan is to create an arcade module. I'd like to add support for GameSalad games... BUT THEY WON'T COMMUNICATE WITH THE SERVER. (That means no high scoring.) I can't use basic web functions like POST/GET with the OpenURL behavior, because the OpenURL behavior doesn't support expressions. I can't save web data to GameSalad attributes or tables either.

So while the GameSalad engine is in the process of being improved, this basic issue remains. That's the main reason why I'd recommend against GameSalad... which is unfortunate. With just minor improvements, GameSalad would be more than just game development software. It could be a revolution in development.

There are significant issues with GameSalad. However, I still like the software. It is what it is... a fast way to make games and apps. It's great for beginners or those that hate code. That's where I would recommend GameSalad. If you're just getting started, and programming languages are intimidating, GameSalad is a great introduction to game development.

Its Probably best if you just listen to the advice of these 12 year old idiots you have never met and never find anything out for yourself.

That forum only has 38 members. why would you consider anything posted there as credible?

LOL, that was an interesting 'article'. They obviously don't know that Gamesalad apps can be in the top 100, and that GS's appeal IS THAT THERE IS NO CODING.
@Justme74 Pin's Penguin Puzzler was in the top 10 on the Mac store.
@UtopianGames I believe they had one called Bumps that got to #66 in the top 100 at its peak.
Not to mention other quality games by @Tshirtbooth, @FryingBaconStudios, @Jonmulcahy, @tatiang, @UtopianGames, and many others (those are they few I remember lol :))

Also a similar thread said 'Things that should be banned'

Tool's only as good as the hand that wields it

With all due respect to the author of that "post" -- I have made over $2,000 from my very first game created with Gamesalad. I picked up the tool in March and published at the beginning of June. While that's not a huge amount of money, it's enough proof to me that we can make quality games with GS and that they can sell.

Look at Ordinarium or Bridge the Gap 2... those are basically AAA quality titles created with GS. There are others as well.

My only complain with GS - and I think this is tied to their use of Agile Development - is that they refuse to commit to dates for anything... bug fixes, features, etc. They also seem to be too slow in quickly fixing critical bugs, at least for my taste. However, that's more of an organizational problem (in my opinion) than any issue with the tool itself. I think GS is going to have to improve a lot in this area, especially with the competition it has from Stencyl and others.

I didn't read the article, but I will say this - there are a lot of negative opinions of GS out there. Mainly due to the quality of the product (bugs, broken releases, etc). It's really quite a shame but once GS gets their act together with regards to quality assurance, I'm sure it will be taken more seriously.
  • tenrdrmertenrdrmer Member, Sous Chef, Senior Sous-Chef Posts: 9,934
@deadlights actually the majority of negative opinions are from people who have never used gamesalad. (ie. Ignorant people)

Theres only a handful of actual gamesalad users that constantly bitch and moan about every little thing and blame gamesalad for their own shortcomings and lack of overall skill with the tool.

There's a joke in there somewhere..

Yeah, it's obviously setup by some kid (no offense to the younger people in this community) and a couple of his friends that can't figure out something as simple as GameSalad. They're probably mad because nobody would build their game for them, so they took their ball and went home, made a website, and started crying. A web forum with 38 people registered is nowhere to be getting your information about GameSalad. You gotta figure it out for yourself, and this is the place to start.

It's not your website is it, @krenisis? And you're just trying to direct people there to see how pissed off you are at GameSalad? :P

To put some prospective on the quality of posts on that site: http://ios-game-reviewer.forumotion.com/t53-how-long-does-it-take-to-make-a-game

I Loved the GS one, lol... definitely an upset kid...

That figures. I thought I smelled a big ol' stinkin pile of failed developer.

I found this post particularly entertaining. - "In Xcode there is a button that takes voice commands so like if I want to shoot fireball's from ryu I just say shoot fireballs and the xcode types the code in for me. Xcode does all the work you just press voice command button and it type code in based on what you say."

I love that they think you can make a quality game in a day. Although it does depend on the kind of game & length.
I want to see that 'Final Fantasy game' one of them 'made in a day'
And as far as I know there isn't voice-recognition in Xcode

Gonna go ahead and close this too as I don't really see it being useful to the Community in any way.
