My First Side Project

Hey, guys. As you may know, my long term goal is to make a puzzle-platformer game that utilizes many features that make puzzle games great, and combine it into (hopefully) one big supergame. Well, that's, like I said, a LONG-TERM goal. I work on it every now and again. But, I want to get some simpler stuff done before I dive into big stuff. So, I am in the midst of making a top view western themed shooter. I have already made the characters the main menu background, and a button template. All I have to do now is design the animations, make a few more menu backgrounds, make some level backgrounds and then make the game! 
Shouldn't be TOO hard. What I think will be cool about this game is, I'm planning to have the 'campaign' story-based, but I'm also seriously considering adding a ZOMBIE storyline to the level. Not just your typical Firefight, Nazi Zombies, Spec Ops, Wave-based zombies. I'm talking full on zombie CAMPAIGN! I have a feeling once the game's done, it'll be freaking sweet! Tell me what you think of this idea. Maybe give me some ideas to add to it. I'll probably need some help along the way, because, I'm still VERY new to the idea of making a game from the ground up. My first concern is, can I make it so that the game saves your progress, like in an iPhone game? I don't want the game progress to be deleted once you close the window. I want the game to be level-based, if possible. TY for any suggestions, and answers to my question(s)! Happy gamemaking!
P.S. I'd put this in 'Announce Your Game', but there's not really anything to be announced yet. It's still in the design stage. I'm just throwing out the idea, so that people can see, and give me ideas.
