•••••••• edit: I've just found the first files for this, which I started in April 2006, so I think I must have sent it to Apple in 2007 now, I can't find any emails to confirm, but later files do seem to confirm this; anyhow I've adjusted the dates, for the record.... what record, I cannot say.... ;-) ••••••••

I always loved the idea of an electronic book ever since I read about one in a science fiction story back in the XXXX's (I refuse to tell you that date in case it might incriminate me... ;-) )

Anyhow, back in 2006, there was only one ebook reader on the market, I seem to remember, the Sony one whatever it was called then, maybe a few others, but if you remember, none of them were making much dent in any markets because of two reasons: difficulty in getting ebooks to read on them, not many were sold or even known about and.... the iPad hadn't been invented yet.... (or maybe they had just started working on it for its launch in March 2010).

So, still in April 2006, I started to design a concept for an electronic device which I hoped would not only be an ebook reader but which would be used for the internet, etc. (A concept only, you understand, no electronics or coding, just the idea). To design the idea and get the presentation up and running must have taken me a good six months or more; but I was blinkered by it all and really did think I had something special at the time. I guess hope beyond hope gives one rose-tinted glasses and optimism even in the face of naivety... or something.....

Anyhow, I was really excited about it at the time and convinced myself that Apple would be excited too. I sent them emails... many emails.... some even (more naivety) addressed to steve at apple dot com; different employees there, and finally got the Keynote presentation onto disc and sent it to Infinite Loop, California in early 2007. Never heard a word. Zilch. Of course.

And then three years later, the iPad 1 was here. Blew my ideas out of the water but hey, at least I tried, three years before that, I guess you could say...

I did read, after I had sent the presentation, that any ideas sent to Apple immediately become their property.... yes, really....

OK, enough there, you've got the picture..... today I stumbled across the files for this presentation buried in an external drive. And I thought, rather than it sinking lower into those magnetic depths, why not show it to you guys? For what reason? At least I'd have the satisfaction of knowing more pairs of eyes than my own (and my wife's) will have seen it, and perhaps that will make up in some short way, for all of the wasted time and energy I spent over 5 years ago.

But are you guys interested or not I'm wondering. I was going to make a poll here but I can't find where to make it anymore.... perhaps it's right under my nose....

So I'll say this: if you would like to see a video of the presentation of an ebook device concept I created and sent to Apple in 2007 then post here and let me know.

(The video is just clicking through each screen of the presentation in the Keynote app relatively fast, so if you wanted to read on any of the pages, you'll have to pause the video...)

When there are more than 5 who want to see it, I'll post the vid. :-)

    @vicentealvarez

    Heh, I'd love to think that but I doubt it very much! But who knows if some small thing in the presentation didn't give them a small spark?

    No, maybe not.... :P

    Thanks for being the 1st to want to see the vid of the concept. :-) 5 more needed.....

    (I'm going to bed in half an hour so if there aren't five more by then it'll wait til the morning...............)

    Do you know I've lost my voice this morning? Well, you wouldn't know, I know! I really have lost it (my voice, that is), it's a strangely-pitched croak this morning.... so I'll try not to breath on anyone....

    That would have been impressive if that had happened but just to confirm, no matter how many times I contacted Apple by different means, I didn't hear a single peep at the time...

    Ha! Good point!

    But "I hereby reclaim my intellectual property.... which you weren't interested in anyhow otherwise you would have replied to my letters and emails"

    No, it's far from genius; but I thought it would really impressive Apple at the time and I admit I used to be really proud of the concept in '06/'07.

    ------------------------------------------------

    So here is the video of the presentation I sent to Apple in February 2007, concerning a concept for an electronic device. All ideas shown (for what they're worth) were - as far as I knew then - original to me. All in all, not too bad an attempt to gaze into the future considering the iPad 1 was almost three years away, I guess...

    Anyhow, here it is:

    Edit: video set to private because I forgot my personal details were at the end of it.... thanks again @ooi :-) Latest one further down....

    Yeah it's fine now - although I have no sound here at work so I'll have to wait till I get home to take in the awesomeness. :D

    @ooi

    I really hope you're not disappointed... there is no soundtrack to this vid (I could have easily have put some music on, drat) – it's just the slides I made in the Apple Keynote app....

    @gyroscope haha I just had quick look through, pretty smart - and you'll never know if this had any bearing on Apple making that iPad, that's gotta be frustrating! iLeaf wasn't a bad name either for something aimed primarily at books!

    PS Just a heads up, you might want to obscure your personal details from the end of the vid... trust no one X_X

    @ooi You're right, I'll never know if it had any small bearing on Apple for the iPad; it is still frustrating in it's own way! (Still highly unlikely tho' but nice thought all the same...)

    Glad you like the name, I was proud of that as well at the time...I really did think they'd say..... "Pod..... Leaf...... yeah, leaf, leaves.... of a book.....ebook..... iPod;.... iLeaf......way to go!.............." ;-) I was going to register the name and everything....

    THanks for the heads up, @ooi , I had forgotten some of my personal details were showing at the end, I'll chop them off now and reupload the vid.....

    On that note, you might have noticed I used my pseudonym at the time (Spider Griffin) but I finally trashed that a couple of years ago. :-)

    So the vid will be temporarily blocked for the moment, but won't be long. (I could even put a soundtrack onto it as well)

    No worries, @ooi and it's appreciated! (I get enough silly spam at the moment as it is).

    I've chopped off my personal details now (which brought tears to me eyes, haha!) and added one of my music tracks to the vid just for a bit of noise in the background, it starts at about a minute into the vid, I think.

    I'll be posting the link very shortly.... another minute for it to upload....

    Edit: no sorry, it's telling me 29 mins for upload....I hope I've selected the correct format.....

    OK, here's the amended video, now with one of my tracks in the background for a bit of entertainment value! (It starts about 25 seconds in). I've copied what I wrote about it above the first vid:

    I like the dual page idea. Someone should make an e-reader like that -- I'd buy it. Maybe this should be put on Kickstarter? There are people who won't buy an e-reader because they don't feel like a book... a lot more people than you might think, in fact. I think something like this cold really be successful if it just tried to emulate the look and feel of a hardcover book (and used an e-Ink display) and left out the other Internet features and such.

    Fun fact (from the Steve Jobs biography) -- the iPad was actually in development before the iPhone.

    @JustMe74

    The dual page idea was touted for quite a while, I seem to remember, and there were strong arguments for both camps. I think a manufacturer did finally do a dual screen ebook reader in about 2008 or '09 but it never took off... I guess you can't please all of the people all of the time! :-)

    @gyroscope - Probably because it didn't have the content delivery mechanism behind it. The only e-readers that matter now are the Kindle, Nook, and to a lesser extent, iPad.

    @JustMe74 of course, yes.... content is king!

    I can't argue with that... ;-)

    @gyroscope the only thing is that apple started making the iPad 10 years ago. They made an iPhone and a iPad then decided to release the iPhone first. The iPad was what inspired the iPod Touch, and it was developed at the same time as the iPhone. Good idea though, you should of gotten a patent or two. :)

    D'oh! Seriously, thanks for the info; I wish I had known that at the time, I wouldn't have wasted my time.... enthusiasm, naivety and hope blinkered me then anyhow, I guess, perhaps I still would have tried even knowing this info.
