Using particles to create a temporary line, is it possible?

I've been fooling around with the particles function to create a sort of trail/ninja slice/cool effect. It works when I'm holding the mouse down for a while, or when I move it slow, but if I do a fast slice, it only spawns 2 particles, 1 at each end.

Anybody know a way around this or is what I want possible with that function? Thanks!
