    Very insightful. I am a fan of give away a bunch of content for free, and pay for me models. However, IMHO the content you give away needs to have depth, but can't be more than 1/4 of your total game.
    Poor UI decisions are also to blame for these guys woes. Look at how Zynga does their games. They do a good job of letting you play the game (Words With Friends, Draw Something, Scramble With Friends, etc...), giving you content and making sure you know how to buy the full game. You get access to 100% of the game from these Zynga games. For a bigger, more robust game, I would just follow their model, but only give away 25-30% of the full game for free. The rest is an IAP.
    Just my opinion.
