Game state question: when should we save state and when do we need to reinstate previous game state?

with gs viewer, game state is preserved even after slide to unlock. But the game starts over from the beginning when gs viewer is started again. What will happen when our games are actually installed on an iPad or iPhone? I assume game state will be preserved if the screen goes black and after slide to unlock. But if the user has to use another app, then comes back to the game, will the game start over from the beginning?

iOS is a multitask environment so all apps stay in an active state, essentially there is no quitting an app endless you kill it by double clicking the home button and it shows the background app and you can quit them. So to answer your question, under most conditions the app stays in an active state when a user backs out unless it is killed as I described.
