Minor Touch Control Issues - Need Help

Gentlemen,
So I've been playing around and tweeking with the idea of a platform game, now controls are working correctly when played with a keyboard, but since this is for iPhone, I've implemented touch controls but I have seemed to have encountered some issues.
The first issue is with the Dpad. Though it works correctly, you press right, character moves right, you release the button and he stops. The main issue though seems to be if you were to press and hold the button, then drag your finger off of it, the character will continuously run in that direction until you must repeatedly press other buttons for him to finally stop.
Second issue is with the jump button, again works as designed but if you were to repeatedly press the jump button quickly, the character keeps jumping in the air and gets higher and higher.
Hopefully you fine folks can help me out since I'm stuck in this rut.
