Cannot publish with Application Loader 'an unknown error occurred'

Now this is very annoying. I am trying to publish my game once I generated the app file and compress it. But when the application is processing the zip file the message 'an unknown error occurred' appears. How can I solve the problem if the problem is unknown. Any ideas what could make this vague message appear?

I think I may have received this error earlier in the week. But, after a few tries, my app disappeared from the drop down menu (the one that asks for which app you want to upload). When I went to iTunes connect, the status on the app had changed to waiting for review. The strange thing is I never got a confirmation from the application loader that it was accepted. At this point, I'm waiting to hear from the reviewer to see if anything went wrong.
