Same game performs worse on Iphone 4

Evening all, My game runs totally smooth on an iPad 1, totally smooth on an iPod Touch 2, and totally PANTS on an iPhone 4!!?
Currently been testing via GSViewer, first live linked, then running from the viewer's game list after disconnecting. I suppose I'll have to try an adhoc to see if that changes anything, but can anyone else speak from experience on this please?
The game is breaking and behaving badly because of timing issues that are being introduced by the fact that it appears to be sticking, or pausing for a second or so, every 5 seconds (or so!). But this only happend on iPhone4 - much older devices run the game really well, and always have done.
I know the 4 will be using the bigger images, is this it? Is it just that the 4 can display really big images, but isn't actually very good at handling them?
Any insight much appreciated, as I've been trying to get the game ready to upload all week, and this new issue is the final straw!

    I'd wait to see how the ad hoc works. That will give you a definite benchmark on how the game will handle in the real world. Could just be bogging down because of the viewer.

    Still haven't done an adhoc yet, but have improved performance anyway by reducing the size of a large chunk of my images! I thought bigger was better, but now that I've quartered their size, the images now look much better on iPhone 4 and the game runs much smoother.
