"Universal Binaries" for iPhone/iPod touch and iPad?

I didn't realize that developers are able to either 1. make one binary that will auto-adjust to whatever resolution they're being launched on, or 2. enclose two binaries in a single application and will launch whichever version is for their device.

This got me thinking...

I suggest a feature in GameSalad where you can compile two binaries into one application. Since they *might* use the same resources (graphics/music/sound), it would be awesome for the user to just purchase one app. This will reduce "HD" and normal versions sprouting up all over the App Store.

Whatcha think?

I was reading about this earlier today. I hate having to make so many separate versions of my game... one iPhone / iPod Touch, one iPad, iPad "Lite" and iPhone / iPod Touch "Lite".

But unfortunately, I don't know if a Universal Binary is a great idea. If GameSalad supported in-app purchases, that would eliminate the need for "Lite" versions of my game. But when it comes to optimizing my games, I don't know if I want to put high-res files on older iPhone hardware.

Although, this is a concern of mine... when I read about the iPhone (HD) ...yet another size format to be concerned about... I'm starting to think about ways to improve app management.

When I converted Photics: Revisions - Course Correction to the iPad... I had very little to do. I added four-way auto-rotational support to the iPhone / iPod Touch version of my game, so all I had to do was adjust the display size and reset the camera.

The iPad version of my game runs on my iPod Touch, but it's not playable.

I'm thinking if GameSalad supported vector graphics, universal binary support could be easier.

I would use the universal binary on my iPad versions, and make a separate iPhone only version. That way, the player could spend a little more to get the game on both devices.

However, in-app purchase is what I'd like to see more. Please make this available GS team!

From what I've read about this, basically theres 2 files inside a universal app and it just choose between them for either iPad or iPhone, problem with this you have to have same price for your app for both version, I personally would have used, just because it would be easier to manage but in the end its probably better to have separate price points, but it would be nice to have this option. I'd rather have in-app purchases though!

Edit: @BTT oops didn't realize you put this up in the first paragraph should actually read through everything instead of skimming haha

Haha I tried to start this thread a couple days ago, but nobody answered haha
