questions about blurry images?

hi i have a background image size of 1024x768 and when i tested on my iPad viewer with resolution independence checked obviously looks blurry but i get 6 mb of ram but if i unchecked this option then my image looks good but my image ram is 24mb, so lets say i decided to make this game for iPad and iPad 2 only, so i unchecked RI and i use a image of 1024x768 but why is this image using so much ram?
