Pixel actor is great, but it's not free. You pay for what you get. :)

@hado.... If you're looking for free art programs for mac make sure you check out Inkscape (vector based.... like illustrator) and Gimp (Like photoshop).

Also- Adobe now has a subscription based model where you pay 50 bucks a month and can download ALL their awesome programs. I hope this helps.

Hado, you need to beg, borrow, or steal (don't steal) the money to get www.pixelmator.com/
Honestly, if you're serious about it, it's worth every penny - well, ten times every penny. It compares VERY favourably to ANY version of Photoshop (ie. even Elements and all that rubbish) for the money. It's 30 dollars, Photoshops (the cheaper, standard version) is 699 dollars. It can do over 80% of what Photoshop can do, for a fraction of the price. I promise you, I've used Photoshop proffesionally for 15 years and have now completely replaced it for $30, and really, really, don't miss it at all. There's a free version on the site, so you can have a go, at least for 30 days!
Also, check out www.sumopaint.com it's totally online, and totally free, and totally brilliant!
If you really need vectors, then do some homework and get x11 (or I believe it's Quartz now, since Mountain Lion), but it's a pretty steep learning curve, and, oh! I've just remembered, Pixelmator does vextors very well these days as well!
You won't regret it - ditch the rest and go with Pixelmator!

TLast year i Used Photoshop and fireworks on windows... but is very expensive...
Today in my Mac, I use:
    - PIXEN for sprite editing http://pixenapp.com/
    - Art Text 2 for text FX, Button and GUI element http://www.belightsoft.com/products/arttext/overview.php
    - Pixelmator for photo editing (is simple respect photoshop but very powerfull) http://www.pixelmator.com/
    - iDraw (on mac and iPad) for vector drawing http://www.indeeo.com/idraw/

Nice Gpelle, Art Text looks interesting - that's the one area that Pixelmator is lacking in. The text editing is fine, but there are scant text manipulation options, and, as yet, no unified bevel, emboss etc. solution, one thing that the users are screaming out for on the forums!
On the plus for PX though, while I do have iDraw for the iPad, and have been seriously considering it for the Mac, I have actually been able to do very well without it, as Pixelmator's vector tools have recently had a large overhaul and are more than adequate - for my needs, at least!
Keep finding myself at the PIXEN site, but have never quite taken the leap. I think I'd waste far too much time with it if I downloaded it! However, looking at Oskar's eMMa, I'm sorely tempted to get messing about with walk anims!

    Try http://pixlr.com/editor/
Its online and doesn't even require downloading. It also works on mac or pc.

I would suggest trying out Inkscape (in combination with gimp). Inkscape is a free vector graphic tool with a good toolset. To help with the learning curve I wrote a blog '2D game art for programmers' which might be helpful. I suggest ready from the earlier post onwards as they cover (works for most vector tools e.g. Illustrator, CorelDraw, idraw with small variations in the naming of tools and functionality)
