10 Questions about iAds!

Hello everyone :)

So I am working on some projects and thought I might give iAds ago in one of them but had some questions, lots of questions. Also I know you need pro to have this feature :) O also couldn't find the question thread on mobile forums so sorry if this annoys people.

1. Is it allowed to have an in app purchase to disable iAds with GS?

2. Are iAds based on clicks/touches or downloads of the ads game?

3. Is play heaven pop up screen the only option for ads or can I still have banner ads?

4. How frequently should ads be shown, are they able to be shown throughout whole gameplay continuously?

5. If banner Ads can be done, can only one be used on a scene or can I use many, eg put them as signs in a platform game ect?

6. Who, how and how much does iAds work? Eg, who controls what is displayed, how much does someone get per an ad if clicked or download? How is this decided?

7. Is it possible to put in fake ads if player not connected to Internet and use URL to go to that site ect?

8. Can there be a choose so certain ads don't get displayed if it's a children game?

9. What type of report system is there in place for each ads option? I know play heaven is like one a month but what about other?

10. Do people from GS use ads and find it's effective? Or does it get rid of players because they dislike them? Experience with them?

I think that's all I had stored up, again am sorry if they are simple to answer or on the forums somewhere but couldn't find too much about them, also I could t find how to start a question thread using mobile forums.

Thanks :)

I can answer a few of them from experiences outside GS.
6 + 8: You control what is displayed, when you choose the settings within your own game, as you will see a suggested age limit on the game, it will be based on this. The money really depends, as for example the payout rate is different for someone who get 10k downloads on their app and someone who gets 1million downloads. You should take a deeper look at this as it is a bit complex.

7: No you cannot, as far as I know you do not have access to device information, so you can't actually check if a user is connected or not.

10: iAds are more commonly seen in free games as this is the way they earn money, users usually have no problems with this. However in paid applications users tend to get upset by the ads. And yes, if you have a decent amount of downloads, displaying ads tend to give some money, I prefer selling my apps though.

Hope this helped you a bit ;)

    Hi there,

    1. Yes, you can disable iAds with an IAP. You'd need to create a Boolean attribute so the ads know when you've purchased and disabled them.

    2. It's based off of clicks and views. You get much more money if a player taps on the ad, but you will still get some money if you don't. Apple still lays you a bit for displaying the ad. Of course, the more downloads you have, the more money you make.

    3. I believe you can only have one ad system right now...someone correct me if I'm wrong.

    4. Yes. If apple allows a good fill rate, your ads can show up all the time.

    5. Banners is the only options we have right now, sorry.

    9. You can actually view your daily earnings in iTunes Connect under "iAds".

Hope this helps with the remaining questions.

Also, if you need it, here is a tutorial on setting up iAds:

    Thank you @LyboTech and @Braydon_SFX

That helped heaps, just needed some background info so I could look into it more and know a bit.

I am just going with ads for now as most games people get are free these days ( based on my facts from sources) so why not join them instead of paid :)

Just one more question sort of, where should the banner ads be placed, I thinking of them on the bottom during gameplay only. Like flow free if you ever played that with ads :) or should it jutlst be when i have a menu opened?

    Thanks

I have one question too: do you get money from iAds even if the user plays the game for like half an hour and iAd banners keep showing up (so something like $$/minute), or you just get paid once your app has been downloaded and had a first run?

    7. Is it possible to put in fake ads if player not connected to Internet and use URL to go to that site ect?

Yes you can do this but be careful. You are placing an iAd over the top of your own 'custom' ad and clicks can sometimes get confused. Eg. I found that on iPhone3 a click of a covered ad was not registered but on iPhone4 it was registered. You need to test!

@FViMagination great question would love to hear an answer for that too,

@lycettebros fake ads were only an idea because I bet some people like me don't use wifi or turn airplane on ect. But i Think the practically is not reasonable in a game. If they don't have Internet connection then they can't go to a link ect. Thanks

Would love to know the answer to the other question! :)

So been thinking and working and here are my next set of questions about iAds. Sorry if it's already answered.

    1. If I have an iAd banner placed on a different scenes. Will the ad change depending on what scene I am on.
Eg. Scene one shows ads about paypal but then the game goes to another scene. Will it still show the paypal ad or will it show an ad about something else.

    2. How can you use iAds to advertise my game ect. So this has nothing to do with ads in my game but if I want to be part of the system where my ad shows up on other people's games, where would I go for that. Has anyone used this before and found it useful?

    3. Do you only get paid once per ad if it is shown more than once. Eg I play game and there is a paypal ad, according to people that will give me barely anything, but if I close the app and restart iPhone and load app again and get same ad, do I get paid again or just the once because they already paid for that iAd?

4.do the banner ads always cover across the whole screen in portrait mode or can their size be adjustable?

Thanks if anyone can help or answer.

Just a quick bump as it would be helpful to know this. Even if the size can be adjustable.

    Many thanks

    1) It can change you have no control over what is shown but yes it is a different add so another $0.01 :-)

    2) Search for Iads its easy to sign up and apple gives you all the tools for the banners. I have not heard many good things about conversion rates from Iads most people say cross promo between your own aps is the best way.

    3) I think the adds change every 5 seconds or so and yes you get paid everytime a new ad is shown I think its $0.01 every showing. If someone clicks though the ad you can make upto $1 they dont even have to download the app that is in the advert.

    4) Yes apple we reject apps that are not top or bottom at the size they set.

To give you some background my Sleeps till Christmas app (Link below) is Free. I get about 350 downloads a day at the moment and I am making about $4 a day. Which is ok but if you have a really good game I would think of other ways to make money from it maybe with IAP's or make you game a paid.

Take a look at the market (go on gaming forums such as Touch Arcade) you will see there is a growning shift back to paid app!!

    Thanks heaps @dwibre

    That's very helpful :)
My game had been in design for a long few months, with lots of research involved ect. Production of the game started a few months ago but hit a dead end and had to make major changes.

The game is designed to have an ad at the bottom of it, with the option to remove if player wants using Iaps. There are also planned to have 6 other Iap as well if the player likes more content, just like flow free :). I just thought ads would help make a little extra for those users who don't want more content. As this game is very professionally done so far in my opinion, i figured every little step counts.

So thanks for taking the time to reply and I will be downloading your app
    shortly :)

I do believe any further questions should be answers by experience

    @TyGames

That's random, but since you stated I will help :)

@Elfizm Its because hes jailed for posting the same discussion over and over...

So instead of starting a new thread i will ask here!

In relation to iAds, if there is an iAd shown on every scene, will the ad keep changing because its a new behavior setting. Or will it all be recognized as one and it doesn't matter if it takes five seconds to complete a level and change scene. Because when I play a game like wild surf, the ad takes a few seconds to get started then I go to main menu, go back again and it takes 3 seconds to load. If this is the case they might be pretty useless on a five second level.
    Thanks

    @Elfizm

Hmmm...maybe you could make some kind of level opening and/or ending animation, if possible/applicable, so that even if the player beats the level in 5 seconds, the ad is still displayed for longer.

And you can also group multiple levels into 1 scene. Not only do ads display for an adequate amount of time, loading times are also gone!

Just something's to think about ;)

    Hope this helps
