How many levels to give in a free version?

famekraftsfamekrafts Member, BASIC Posts: 834
I have completed 60 levels of my game. I am planning 2 versions one free and other pro. How many levels should I give in the free versions? I was planning over 200 levels but as it will take time, I want to release both versions now and continue creating more extensions for the pro versions with different themes. I am confused with how many levels I should give free? I have two worlds with 32 levels in 1st and 30 in second. I am going to create another 30 for the pro version.

Any suggestions?

I do not have pro gs right now so I am going with two versions right now.

    If you are doing it that way, do half the first world, or one full world. Enough to get somebody hooked that they want to pay for it but not enough so that they felt they've played enough.

    what matarua said. I would also make sure that the free version shows off your best and most entertaining levels as well.

    I was thinking of 24 levels free or is it too much?

    It's quite a bit, but this gives enough time for the user to see your games features and decide if they want more of the game. So if your game is awesome the whole way through the first 24 levels, then the user will most likely want to purchase the full game.

    What you are looking for is the user who thinks, 'I wish this game had more levels' - there's a lot of comments like that in reviews.

    @wickedsunny

    To add to the other guys' comments:

    If you're planning on the full game being 200 levels, then 25 levels for a free lite version isn't much more than 10% of the total game which seems more than acceptable to me.... but if you feel you can hook more people with a few more levels, then have 30 levels.... it really does depend on the type of game and the gameplay to see the smallest amount of levels get people addicted then plus say, another 10 levels....

    @gyroscope the problem is that creating 200 levels will take lot of time. Maybe I can start with 24 levels and as I create more stages for the pro game, I add more stages in the free version.

    That's an idea; although sounds like a bit of extra work, keep having to update free version as well as full every time.... just a thought.... I'd recommend to stick with your max. amount of levels and finish the whole game before a free or full version is put in the store...

    Maybe think about 100 levels...if each level is more than a minute gameplay - say average of 2 mins - that's over 3 hours gameplay there.... if you're selling for 0.99p or £1.65 (or equivalent in dollars of course) that seems good value enough to me.... and if anyone bought a game for a pound and complained of only three hours gameplay, I'd say: "What do you want, jam on it?!" :-)

    Anyhow, hope that's food for thought for you.

    My average level takes about 3 minutes, so even if I make 92 levels and sell for 0.99 $ that will be fair I think. I can make more extension packs later as a totally different theme based game.

    Sounds good thinking. :-) IAP would be the way to go there, as you know, if you decide to go Pro.

    And as a suggestion, maybe 20 levels for your free version - one fifth of the complete game sounds about right, I reckon.
