Ram for MacMini 2012

MarcoColMarcoCol Member, PRO Posts: 279
Hi,

I've posted a few days ago, that my GS sometimes stumbles while using the simulator.
My MacMini is brand new, with 4GB ram. So I want to upgrade it. My question to you is:
Should I buy 8GB or 16GB?
I do nothing else with the MacMini, only cut a few trailer, but no big projects.

hmmmm, i would go with 16 as you won't need to upgrade for a long time, and u can enjoy the comfort of the extra ram all that time. But 8 is still sufficient, but I've heard on another thread the more RAM you have, the less GameSalad crashes.

I had a lot of problems with the simulator. SSD HD helped us more than anything. Even our older macs are faster than the newer ones in the Simulator if they have SSDs.
Not that we didn't upgrade the ram. We went to 8 on the laptops.

I worked till version 10 on my old Mac Mini G4. It doesn't stumble. But now with the newest version my new Mac Mini 7G stumbles... Maybe it's because of the Ram or the HDD

I bought now 16 GB and GameSalad works without any stumbles but I am thinking of trying first 8GB before i made a final decision.
I see a lot of feedback, that 4 to 8GB is a big step, but 8 to 16GB only a minimal step. What did you think?

There is a saying, an old one. You can never have enough toilet paper and you can never have enough ram.

8 to 16 is a huge step as well, it's not like processor speeds.

Although GameSalad is ridiculous when hogging memory (not optimized well for this), it would be best to just stick with 16, as you will likely avoid hiccups when running apps in conjunction with GameSalad.

@RP - I have to disagree on the toilet paper front, My wife buys 16 at a time and I can only use so much before the toilet refuses to flush and I have to put my hand in to swish it about.

with 16GB now I see, that there aren't really less hiccups :(
So with GameSalad I see no changes in performances or crashes. It runs stable but with some hiccups when emulate/test the game...

That is GameSalad not your ram. The ram provides you the ability to keep more things open, access for scratch and rendering. If your GameSalad file is crash prone, you may have something problematic going on in your file, assets or code.

I have a 2012 Mac mini 8 gigs of ram....the thing does pretty overall...for some huge projects, like some unity 3d stuff it can't handle as well but for 2d GameSalad stuff..works great
