Spawning Versus Particles

If I want to make an explosion, does it make a huge difference in game resources whether I make my burst using particles or make it by spawning and destroying ~ 20 identical actors?

Yes, it will make a HUGE difference. Particles would be better than spawning/destroying 20 different actors.
