How can I know if my game idea is original or not?

I've got an idea for a word game that I'd like to make for the Ipad. But before I go and spend countless hours working on it, how can I know if my idea is original? And I know someone out there wants to tell me that there are no truly original ideas anymore- everything borrows from something else, etc., but you know what I mean- I want to make sure I'm not ripping someone off.

I've already checked out the top 100 word games in the app store, and haven't seen anything similar to my game, but what about the games that aren't in the top 100?

I'm guessing there's no real good answer here. Does anyone have any advice? Thanks!

    Spot on! ;)

There's no complete way of knowing. Try searching the name you've chosen for it on the App Store and see if it's there.

Well, first, what's your game about? I can tell you if it's original, and if not, how to make it original.

If his game idea is truly original...trust me, he won't want to share it, especially openly on the Forums ;)

Does your own game remind you too much of something else you have seen or played before? (Be honest with yourself). If not, then go with it.

    Or just ask @deadlyseriousmedia

Full of original ideas. But there hundreds of thousands of apps in the stores. Pretty sure it's been covered a few times but no one knows because how many of these apps only get seen is only a few. But if you think if a game that has similar features then maybe that's what inspired you.

    Ha ha! Thanks @Elfizm

Honestly, it's a bit more complex than simply originality. At the end of the day all you need to ask yourself is "would I buy this game if someone else made it?" Just be honest about the answer. I'm pretty tight with my wallet and free memory so there are plenty of games I've put on hold because I didn't like the answer to question.

Try not to worry to much if people would buy it and focus more on would you be proud of it? That's what makes this really worth doing. :)
