Any coders interested in working with two game artists on a game idea?

Hello

Anyone who hasn't seen one of my discussions today, my name is Scott Evans, and I am a digital cartoon artist and animator. You can see plenty of examples of my work at www.lookcreativestudio.co.uk and I'll pop in some examples below too.

Me and my design partner at LOOK (brother Antony, he handles the 3D designs, me the 2D) found GameSalad today and are very keen to create a game with it, so we've spent all night coming up with ideas that would be simple enough for GameSalad noobs like us to produce, but had great game play and which we could layer with really fun graphics and give a funny concept.

We've come up with an idea that we think is very good. Over Christmas I got my son an iPod. He's only 3 but he like playing games on it and watching the kids shows on NetFlixs. Anyway I've spent ages all week trying to find games he would like and the idea we've come up with I've not seen. Its a very simple idea but I think the concept is very strong and has a good chance at being popular and so my partner thinks we should get someone involved who is more GameSalad savvy. I thought I'd ask on here first to see if anyone is interested before we go ahead and try and figure it out ourselves. I'm sure we could put it together, but not as well as a proper programmer

So, anyone who would like to know what this idea is and get involved with us on this, please do drop me a message.

Here are some examples of my work, so that you can see what we can offer to the partnership

    Hey Scott,

Last night my cousins slept here and they are 3 and 4. I showed them Cut the rope and they love it angry birds was still hard for them because of the angle. A good game for kids is big, easy gameplay and lots of cute graphics. People are still making puzzles for iOS but children want games not a puzzle like thay have in the shelf. You need to achieve something like in cut the rope feed Omnom. I have many ideas for you peeps but its night here so I am going to sleep. Add me on skype: maarten.winkels and I will help you with a good game idea.

My son likes Angry Birds, but he gets bored easily so other games that he likes are Bad Piggies, though its not so easy for him so that didn't last long. Some Sonic app games lasted a while. I haven't tried cut the rope yet, at the moment he's on Temple Run, which he is quite good at.

The game I have in mind is something he could play and enjoy and also adults too, like how Castle Crashers in easy enough and enjoyed by all ages.

    Hey man,

Are you asking for a coder? Maybe some more information for what your looking for?
Maybe that will attract more people. :)

Hi. I'm looking to see if there is a coder who would like to work with two graphic designer/animators on a game. I don't want to give to much away on our idea, maybe thats silly but I do think its quite good, but what I will say is that its pretty much a Mario style platformer with a simple twist and good theme, in my own opinion.

Another game that they liked was Mega Run easy controls and real child friendly

That looks like a nice Sonic style game, definitely one to put on the ipod

Thanks, I'm going to look at the messages now and will reply straight away with an idea of what we've got in mind. I'm on UK time, so apologies for the slow reply for anyone who messaged me while we were asleep here in England. Most of the work that I do is for Americans and also businesses in Australia. I am usually up until 2am in the morning (except over the Christmas holidays but its back to work today), so I've never had a problem communicating with the people I am working with overseas.

What we're looking for is a partner. If anyone decided to get involved there would be three of us in total and we would all be equal and if we managed to make a profit then everything would be split three ways. We would value your coding skills and hopefully you would value the expert graphics and animations that we can provide, which would help us stand out in a competitive market and give the game a top tier look.

Will be interested to see who you could potentially bring in ... Make sure you see some examples of previously published titles.

Originally we were going to do this ourselves, as a learning exercise but then when we started coming up with ideas we came up with one that was really strong, in our opinion, and we thought that we shouldn't waste it and it would be best to bring in a partner. A few people have already gotten in touch with u already, all really good but we only need one so we will have to make a choice.

Some of the people who have gotten in touch with us have been really good, but quite a few have been very young. There portfolios are fab but me and Antony are 29 and 31 and we would prefer to work with someone really at least 18, it feels unethical to work with anyone younger. Some of you may feel that is wrong, but this is just how we would prefer to work and hope that you understand that.

We've found a coder to work with, Aaron Shapiro, and we've all started on our principal developments.

Thanks, we're obviously at the very start, so it's gonna be quite a while before it is done but I'll put some production images and animation as we go along.

Thats interesting, I was told he was 22. I've already rejected two minors. Are you certain?

Well that's a shame, we do not work with minors, I will double check with him, but if he cannot prove that he is not 13, then we will have to walk away and find another coder. In the meantime we will continue to prep the artwork.

Doesn't this boy have a mom or dad that can give him a good spanking? I thought minors where banned from the forum.
  • Hey, I would be interested. I have never been paid to program, but this could be a learning experience. Also, how good would you need someone to be? I can do basic stuff, but I would not be able to do really good work.

    @LudwigHeijden

I believe that a 13 year old can be on the forums with parents permission.

A quick Google search brought up this thread of a 13-year olds first game- http://forums.gamesalad.com/discussion/46411/floopy-13-years-old-developer

And one of the Success Stories was by a 14 year old.

    Sorry, I can't do it because I'm a minor.

Gotta love the ambitiousness of some of these kids, most wont be up to anywhere near scratch but they believe they are good enough for a paid job! I've been using GS 3 years and very comfortable with the program but still feel uncomfortable applying for these kind of things .... that and I just don't have the time! Anyway, really make sure you see the users portfolio when looking at coding, the same way we coders do when choosing an artist!

Good work finding that info, but I feel like a lot of people here because of a few, or many young members doing inexperience deals but it also frowns apon me. I am 17 and I do a lot, like those kids who you tell off for being a kids asking for templates, I work with to help them to help them learn the basics ect that way they might create a game on their own. Because like GS promotes, anyone can create. So just because were minors (minor here is under 18) doesn't mean we don't have the skill, money, love to create games. Although some younger minors may not have a acceptable understanding in business and contracts, don't give up on the others who are here to work hard.

    @cartoonscott
Good luck finding a partner and you both have great skill in art. Looks amazing.

@Socks . . . those kids who you tell off for being a kids asking for templates . . . don't give up on the others who are here to work hard. . . etc etc
I've not told anyone off, nor have I 'given up' on anyone, nor have I said anyone lacks the skill, money (!?) or love to make games, I made a throwaway joke that picked up on the general theme of people pitching for this work being minors.

Socks, Aged 7 (and a half)

But saying that I do think there are some important (and unique) issues involved in using children to produce your work for you.

FryingBaconStudios was a mere child when I put him to work on my DonkeyKong rip-off (KonkeyDong) in my Dickensian games workhouse, and now look at him.

No offence it was just heaps of members so I included everyone because they are part of convo. Don't want to get of topic was just stating my perspecitive as a minor. Money was referred to the fact that some have hundreds and not a few bucks of pocket Money.

Careful, your showing your age :)

    Take care
