Art sizing question

Ok so this is probably a dumb question but here goes. I am using Adobe Illustrator to create my art for GS. I've read in the forums that the image should be PNG, 72 ppi, divisible by 2 or 4 height & width, interlaced off, color mode - RGB, anti-aliasing - Art Optimized. I got all that no problem.
My question is when I create a canvas the size of 512x512 but my art on that canvas only fills a portion of the canvas. When I export the PNG out of Illustrator it crops off the white space (where no art is). And it's making my PNG image a size that is NOT divisible by 2 or 4. When you guys are creating art do you always make sure your art fills the full height and width of a say 512x512 canvas so that is divisible by 2/4??? Or is there an easier way to do this???
Thanks
