Could I sell these on the Marketplace?

I have made a cartoon actor model. He can be provided as a Flash, Illustrator, EPS or Photoshop layered file. Someone with limited art skills could buy the character and with minimal art program ability, customize the actor to suit their game. Plus if I was able to sell this online, I would follow up with more assets, like facial features, different eyes, noses, mouths, lip syncs, hair, clothing, weapons and props.

Everything is layered, the hands, arms, eyeballs, eye pupils, eyebrows, side of hair, back of hair, fringe, or in order so that the character can be animated in lots of ways. Instead of me making a few sprites, you could take this model, and create the sprite actions that you need. Customize my art so that it is more unique to the programmer.

So, could I sell this on the marketplace, and if so, for how much?

Yeah I think you could sell these for sure - Are these a pack or individual characters?

The price would be up to you - How much time did you put into each one and what do you think would be a fair price? Personally, that's the question I would ask myself. ;)

I agree, I don't see why you can't sell them, and it's nice that you've left them disarticulated so people can make their own sprites. In terms of pricing that's hard, I haven't done any animation assets myself yet. But try to price competitively, people appreciate that you've put time into your products but keep in mind this is an indie market - people need a fair deal. :)

I'm happy to provide all of these characters as a package, so that people can mix and match hair, eye colours. Later on I could release add ons. Price wise, I really don't mind. Would $50 be too much? Then the add ons would be less, like $20 for mouth collection. Animated eyes (blink). Different hair. Weapons, Outfits. If I made a decent return, I would do lots, different shape faces, different type bodies, so it got to the point that people could really make them unique to themselves, like lego I suppose

@cartoonscott: To become a Marketplace seller you'll start by sending a submission of your work to marketsubmission@gamesalad.com. Send 3 examples of your work (don't send too many) in a zip file.

After you submit your examples you'll have to wait a bit for the GS Marketplace team to evaluate the suitability of your work, so be patient! They'll get back to you if you're approved. From there, they'll send you an email with all the details you need to upload your assets to the Marketplace.

In my opinion regarding setting a price - go to the Marketplace and check out the animation assets and the pack assets and see how the other members are pricing them. I really hate to offer you a specific dollar amount as a suggestion, since I'm new to this myself and I don't want low-ball you if you've put many hours into your asset package. But again, you want to be COMPETITIVELY priced - and the best way to gauge that is to see what similar packs are going for. Keep in mind you can't charge people for sentimentality or if you took 3 weeks to make a couple of art assets (not suggesting you're doing this at all, by the way) - but if you're approved as a seller, one of the things I've come to accept recently is that if I take a long time to make an art asset, that's really my problem, I don't want to pass that along to the buyer. It's up to me to get really good and to be able to produce work in a reasonable amount of time. I'd love to charge a lot more for pieces that take me longer (I tend to hand draw every single little detail freehand for designs/patterns), but I have to remember that the buyer can just as easily skip my assets altogether if I price myself out of a sale. So get on the Marketplace and see what's what! Good luck, I hope to see your stuff up for sale :)

The assets I see in the market place are set sprites. With mine, I am giving people the master files to do with as they wish. They don't just have a single fixed motion, they can make what they wish, and also, if they can customize the artwork as well, even people with low design skills could change features to make it more unique to them. So that is why I was thinking $50, as they could use these characters over and over as a base model, and use differently for different games. However, if people thought $50 is too much, then I'd like to hear before I set the price. I'm not placing value on how long it took me to make these, I'm setting value on what these can offer people.

Your price is fine. If a month or so goes by and sales are low, ou can adjust it.
  • Alembic_SoftworksAlembic_Softworks Member Posts: 114
@cartoonscott - that sounds reasonable. I wasn't implying that there was anything wrong with the price you proposed, just that if you were unsure about how to price it might help to see what's already on there. But you're selling something slightly different so you'll have to adjust as you see fit. And like Bazooka said, you can always adjust it or have sales/promotions later.

Thanks, and Alembic, I didnt think you were being critical, I was just giving out my thoughts to my price reasonings to see if they sounded okay. I contacted SSS last night, but no reply yet, I've found an email address though for the Martketplace, so I will contact it via that way. I don't know if I'll sell many (or any) but its worth a try at least.

Just a heads up that asking for info on what people want for the marketplace is okay. But announcing or any other form is advertising and against forum rules. This is just how it is, I tool sell on the marketplace so it's not personnel just fair for all.

Righto, sorry, I really was just gauging what would be a fair price. I've sent an email to Gamesalad with the artwork this morning, I don't know how long I should expect to hear anything back. As your a seller FBS, can the volume of sales be high? I created the artwork both to sell on here, and as a portfolio piece, so if it does well, great, if not, well nothing lost.

Ah the marketplace's layout really drags down sales but I know they are working on major changes. The reason I decided to put my music loops on the marketplace was to support it's growth. The marketplace could really be a great place for GS and sellers to generate a revenue stream but GS has been slow to develop it and really recognize it's potential for them. If I was them, I would build a great store experience and recruit people like you to make items to stock it.

Agreed, the layout, navigation, categorising and general feel of the marketplace is pretty poor - glad to hear GameSalad are working on changes.

One thing that would be really handy would be the ability to list assets by downloads - I've been selling online stock footage for years (Just checked, 7 years now !!) and when the ability to list assets by downloads was implemented you instantly gained an insight into what was selling (essentially the customer actually wanted).

Im not complaining.... Im honestly bewildered as to what happened to the old " Hey!! heres what i can do for you." section of the forum. How did posting your abilities, and services become a burden to forum users and forum staff? I wouldnt have known about him if he hadnt asked how to post to the store. Did some people actually have a " My stuff is better than yours" forum battle royal or something?

Agreed, I'm also a little puzzled as to why it's a bad thing to tell others that you have some stuff that they might very well be interested in - I can just about stretch to understanding that if these assets where for sale on another website there might be an argument to be made against advertising external services, but to ban people directing you to GameSalad's own marketplace seems weird.

Like Jeffnichols I'm not really complaining, just puzzled ?

Ah so there is a place to advertise your services here on the forums. And its a no updating " bumping" post type deal? Ok so you post in individual titled sections of the forum. Example Working with GameSalad and Announce your Game. Announce games in the announcing game section only. But I also notice on the main page of the forum. All posts from all sections get placed in a most recent time stamp section at the bottom of the stickies.
So even if you post your service in the MARKET PLACE ONLY section. it will still be sent to the main page under the stickies.

I think we are allowed to announce new uploads in Third-Party Services and "Help Wanted" :Art/Sounds
