Run games are overused

Has anyone started to notice that Running games have started to be come overused and are kinda old? I mean yeah, some run games might do something a bit different than others, but it's still mainly the same thing, I mean we have temple run, Jetpack Joyride, and probably a lot of others. I've especially noticed them on Gamesalad, I'd rather not name them, but the whole idea has been used so much that's it not too original of an idea anymore. I don't mean to offend anyone who's making that kinda game, but you have to admit that.

I totally agree. I've seen a ton of runners lately on the forums :O But I also think it just looks that way on the app store because of Jetpack Joyride and Temple Run because they're so popular. You notice them more and so they seem more prevalent. If you catch my drift...

that's a good point, taking notice on that kinda game would cause you to notice it a bit more

Well, the reality is... they're great time wasters.

Same reason COD puts a game out every year. It's the same game over and over, but it's satisfying to a lot of people. Endless runners are popular because as @ericzingeler they are great time wasters and the casual mobile game market is really, more often than not, looking to waste time.

Or perhaps I'm just trying to defend my current project! :P

    @Flamingbanana

I don't agree, becuase right after Temple Run's success, there were clones released week after week (with 1-star ratings) that each briefly held the #1 Free App spots for a few days until the next clone came.

Once a viral game concept is released...there are inevitable clones, or slightly altered clones :/

People need to shift more to unique ideas. I'm not saying people should not reuse a concept, as most games are in some way related/influenced by another game; I'm just people should not be making clones.

Maybe if I'm lucky, my shoot 'em up will do that :3

that's true, but there are a lot of other ways to waste time other than being some guy
running and avoiding obstacles along the way.

I don't want to give anything away just yet, but i believe i've managed to breathe new life into the run forever genre. I agree with you all- its played out. But thats why i decided to try and add a whole new unique dynamic to it! We'll see if you all agree when i release it in the next few weeks. I hope to convert some of ya ;)

The best way to make a surefire fun game that is also unique is to choose an accepted genre, and add one new twist.
That way your audience understands what they're gonna get, but you also differentiate yourself.
For example, Jetpack Joyride: Runner with upgrades and powers.
Recently there was another one that was a runner with Prince of Persia time rewind.

@Chakku most games are based off other games. Nothing wrong with a bit of inspiration from something, and then turning it into something unique.
    @uptimistik

I think you misread my post! ;)

"I'm not saying people should not reuse a concept, as most games are in some way related/influenced by another game"

I'm saying what you're saying- people should turn that inspiration into something unique!

That is an example of a clone:

(it was #1 Free App for a few days...but is now removed)

I'm not saying you can't have your game influenced by another, otherwise all Racing Games would be clones! ;)

It will be officially overused as soon as there is a Run DMC runner.

Here's a quick sneak peak (teaser trailer) for my runner game. I think you'll find it to be pretty unique... and equally nuts ;)

That is the most random thing I have ever seen. which makes it awesome. I wouldn't even consider that a run game, it looks like it has a run game part in it, but it looks a lot like it has other things used in it as well besides that. I am definitely gonna look forward to that, I'm gonna tell my friend about this too, he loves this kinda stuff.

Who was the first to implement the Runner design? Shoot 'em ups have been around for awhile. Lets create the next new control mechanic.

    Thanks @adsentertainment
I definitely wanted to try and give a unique and fun experience for the user. It is in fact a runner- but has some pretty crazy twists to it. Can't wait to release it and see what everyone thinks.
Anyways i hope the game can help promote the idea that you can take old ideas and breathe some new life into them. I happen to love runners but get bored of them after like 10 minutes. So i made this game to solve that problem. You'll see how when its released ;)
Thanks again for the nice comments! Really appreciate that my friend :)

You've definitely done that to me. I like to do similar things with my games too, make them unique and stand out from others, I also want to bring back the old school style, which is what I hope to do that with my semi-retro shoot 'em up I'm currently working on.

@anatomyofdreams That video is amazing. I rarely have a game make me laugh out loud. Please finish this game.

I work at a game studio (day job) and we are all sharing it. haha!

@hotmagic thank you! Reeeeally happy you're finding it funny. The game is pretty much done now. Its just going through one final round of beta testing. I was so concerned at first that the humor would be too strange for people, but the kind words i've heard on these forums have been reassuring! So thank you!
P.s. Hot Magic is probably the best username i've ever heard. Haha

It's very funny to me. Especially the recurring things, like when the dog is holding the guy.
