Jetpack Joyride-style game

I am trying to make a game similar to jetpack joyride. I know how to get the camera to move, character to fly, etc., but I'm unsure of how to make barriers pop up randomly. I would have a solid background image (probably) and just have the character go up and down and have barriers scroll by.

Spawn an actor at the edge of the screen (or off-screen) with a random Y value betwen the top and bottom of the scene (accounting for the barrier's height) and then have that actor move to the left.
