UNLOCKIN, not JL-breakin, NOW A **CRIMINAL** OFFENSE!!! **Sign this Official White House Petition!**

Hey guys,

Don't know if you've heard or not, but it is now a criminal offense (up to $500,000 fine, and jail time) to unlock your phone without your carrier's permission, *****EVEN AFTER***** your contract with them is over :(

This is completely unfair.

Sign this Official White House Petition to make unlocking phones permanently legal.

https://petitions.whitehouse.gov/petition/make-unlocking-cell-phones-legal/1g9KhZG7

It's quick and easy, and if we get 45,442 more signatures in slightly under 3 weeks, it will force Obama to publicly respond to this issue (chances are looking very grim that we can get those signatures :( )

By quick and easy, it's REALLY easy. You don't have to be a citizen or permanent resident or anything.

Just press the 'sign' button.

(It takes a few SECONDS...I'd say 1-3 seconds)

And, ***MOST IMPORTANTLY*** Forward this to all your friends via FaceBook and/or Twitter.

This is the most important part because the population of the GameSalad Forums is not enough to affect the petition too much...
However, if each person who signed it forwarded it to *just one* other person (MANY more, if you post it on FaceBook), and that one person forwarded tit to someone else, and that person...you get the idea, this is a chain reaction!

Just say- "Hey, can you sign this petition? The government has made it illegal to unlock our phones, whether we're on contract or not! But this petition will change that, and only takes a few seconds to sign! Please forward this to at least one other person and hopefully this will work! Thanks! http://goo.gl/32L4H"

Sharing will help **exponentially**!

****HERE'S THE LINK****

https://petitions.whitehouse.gov/petition/make-unlocking-cell-phones-legal/1g9KhZG7

(shortened link for sharing- http://goo.gl/32L4H )

We should not let corporations rule America like this!

Sign this, and ***FORWARD IT***- we can make a difference!

Thanks a lot
Chakku

I am personally against jail breaking devices. If you want open and unlocked get an Android. If you want closed-malware free go with the iPhone

    @poisenden

Ok...for starters, nothing is wrong with jailbreaking. It's the pirating of apps that's the problem. There is literally *nothing* morally wrong with jailbreaking...all your doing is customizing YOUR device the way YOU want it, as you PAID for it. It's your device, not Apple's :/

This thread does not have anything to do with Jailbreaking.

Unlocking and Jailbreaking are two COMPLETELY different things...

Jailbreaking means freeing your device from Apple's restrictions, and customizing it to your liking.

Unlocking, however, means being able to use your Phone anywhere in the world, with any carrier. (for

For Example, you PAYED $950+tax (actually a bit more, since your buying it on contract) for an AT&T 64GB iPhone 5...you want to switch to Verizon in the middle of the contract, because they apparently have better service coverage in your area...NO, that's illegal.

So you want to switch to Verizon with that iPhone AFTER your contract EXPIRES? No, that's illegal too.

    :(

    Hope this is clear.

    Sign and *Forward* the petition.

We can make a difference! \m/

If there's one thing I've learned in the last 4 years is that Obama isn't going to do anything the people want, but more so do as he pleases, but that's getting political, and such discussions are highly discouraged here on the forums.

Apple is against jailbreaking, and unlocking, and do not provide customer support for devices that have been jailbroken or unlocked.

Al Gore is on the board for Apple, and his lips are puckered for the President. So even if they get enough signatures, I have no faith that they will acknowledge such a petition, as they have ignored many petitions that have gotten enough signatures already, like succession from the union (which is ridiculous, but none the less over 14 states have acquired enough signatures to do so.) And they have also ignored the petition to revoke Piers Morgans Visa as well. (Just recent examples of how little the peoples wants, matter.)

I understand your point, I agree, I think the iPhone should be open to whatever carrier you choose, but it goes against what the all mighty Apple has laid forth, and is illegal. The petition will do nothing, as the peoples voice means nothing against the all mighty dollar. And these carriers have shelled out millions upon millions of dollars to have exclusive rights. Again, I agree wholeheartedly, but I believe this petition will be completely ignored, like all the others.

    @SlickZero

Yep, I agree with what you've said...

I can tell this law is going to really hurt, especially a few years down the road.

For example, I JUST bought a new iPhone a few days ago, and I'm traveling to another country in a few weeks (I'm just furious about this :-w )...

Right now, people probably don't care, unless they were planning on unlocking soon.

Most people that wanted their phones unlocked, have them unlocked right now.

BUT, once the next contracts start, this law will really hurt. By then, it'd be too late :(

People have to take action RIGHT NOW, instead of cowering out and suffering later.

Signing an ePetition like this is just sooo simple.

    We must act now.

*****Just to be clear about this, THIS APPLIES TO ALL CELL PHONES, NOT JUST iPhones***** :(

    @SlickZero

The Succession form the union (what a weird petition) was obviously quite unrealistic.

And regarding Piers Morgan's Visa, some people didn't want that to happen, and there was not really too much interest for that. That did not affect people at all.

This however, is a crazy law, and does affect the average person's life.

They can't just ignore this without facing a backlash from the media.

I really do appreciate your input.

(What makes this really mad is that you STILL can't unlock your phone AFTER THE CONTRACT EXPIRES!!!)

    Thanks

    I think unlocking is fine.
@Chakku I don't agree with your view on if you buy it, it's completely yours. You own the physical aspects (the phone, the chips inside, the screen, etc.) but you don't own the software. You are buying a license to use the software.

    Guess What?

Unlocking is illegal. :( (unless you want to pay upto $500,000, and serve time in jail)

From a business perspective it's a great move. Think about it.

Apple sells it for $1000, some poor guy unlocks it, gets fines $500 000. Apple just earned half a million. Great profit.

If I was apple I would start giving away iPhones so there is more chances someone is going to unlock it. Smart thinking I should be CEO. :D

I don't have anything to do with iPhones at this stage. Have iPod touch 4 and 5 and a couple computers and iPads. So I don't really know if the effect is going to be that bad or not.

I don't think apple gets any of it. It's a government fine, why would apple take home a share?

Oh well guess I am not suited to be CEO. I just figured Apple would get a bit but guess I was wrong. I will go back to sleep. Hope it all works out but by the sounds of it , it has a long run ahead.

@Chakku first of all ATT iPhone are not compatable with verizon and vic versa. verzon also ships its iPhone 5's unlocked and I believe ATT announced they will unlock your phone for you once your contract is up.

In all reality the carrier paid Apple some amount for it to be locked to their network. While I think its crap to be illegal they do have a vested claim since they have incured an expense for you to have that phone on their network.

overall this is kinda like who really cares? moding your Console GameSystem is illegal. wheres the petition for that? the manufactures made theses devices to work a certain way. If you want to modify them then do it. most likely there is no way they would detect it anyways. and even if they could, Gun laws don't stop illegal gun sales. how is this law gonna be any different

Whoops! Basically any carrier (including international) that operate via SIM cards.

You paid for the device...you should be able to (legally) unlock it, AT LEAST after the contract expires...

How will this law be different?

It won't. Some people will still unlock their phones, regardless... :|

But who wants to break the law? It's easier, and feels right to do it legally.

And besides, it is *soo* easy to sign this petition...I mean, all you have to do is just hit the 'sign this petition' button...doesen't require to much effort :|

Yes, from my experience many cell providers will provide you with unlock access once your contract is up (you have to request it). The issue is unauthorized, unapproved unlocking of devices (while under a binding contract). Not the overall general idea of unlocking.

Perhaps, but they are in no way obliged to do that.

I think that if we payed whatever we payed for an iPhone (in some cases, $1000), then we should be able to do what we want with it, no questions asked...

Besides, signing this petition is mad easy...

While there are many points that people can agree upon . You are blowing this a bit out of proportion. It has yet to be an issue. I have had multiple world phones that I had to have unlocked before selling. This is like calling someone guilty before evidence is provided. You know? Just say'n. I appreciate your passion about it but, the basis behind this is nothing new.

"unlocking a phone bought after January 26 without your carrier's permission violates the Digital Millennium Copyright Act (“DMCA”)"

Yep, perhaps I am a bit on top with this.

Nevertheless, if we don't act now, then we're stuck.

I see that you pulled out a quote from the law.
This is the problem. People don't take it seriously, as most phones, right now, can still be unlocked.

But in a very short period of time, that will go.
I'm looking out for the future, and want this to be stopped before it becomes a problem.

In just a matter of months, this will apply to people. This fall, as the annual iPhone people have to renew, this will apply to a huge chunk of people :(

    I really appreciate your input.

And as I have mentioned before, the signing of this petition is effortless.

Something else I must emphasize is the forwarding of this. If one guy wit many FaceBook friends posts this on FaceBook, then there will be a lot mmore signers coming from that one guy, so please be sure to forward this.

    =))

Of course I'm not going to single-handedly change this!

However, I hope to plant a seed here and there, that will grow into that petition getting the signatures it needs.

So for example, if you told this to 25 of your friends, and 10 of those told it to 25 of their friends, and then....you see how this is a chain reaction? How it exponentially grows?

Of course I don't plan on getting 45,000 signatures from the GameSalad Forums itself =))
