Recording Your App Gameplay for Free

MantoManto Member Posts: 796
I am happy to be part of the helpful GS Community and therefore I'm willing to record gameplay videos of your apps/games for free and send the files for you. I'll be doing this for a short period.

Here's a sample video:

    I guessed that much ! :))

What capture device are you using ?

Elgato Game Capture HD. If you want me to compare it to the others, I would say that It's smaller and easier to use than many other ones out there. (doesn't require power supply and so on).

    Good stuff !

I've done a lot of research, looking into the best way to record gameplay, for recording the viewer on a Mac I've tried (and bought !) Snapz Pro X and Screen Flick alongside Quicktime's own built in screen recording and a few others - and none of them are ideal, they all have shortcomings, either poor quality, poor frame rates, gamma issues (etc).

I've tried filming off an iPad screen, with both a normal HD video camera and a Canon 5D mkII - all properly set up - tripod, grey card exposure (etc) - but the result was a bit crap, the dynamic range was pretty clipped.

Anyhow . . . all this led me to looking into a hardware recorder and after looking through all the options I arrived at the same answer, the Elgato Game Capture HD !

Can you give me a quick outline of your set up, is this how it works . . .

iPad (1,2,3,4?) > Apple 30-pin Digital AV Adapter > HDMI cable > Elgato Game Capture HD > USB lead > Mac.

    ?

Also does the Elgato come with it's own capture software for the Mac ?

Ok so my set up is just like you said:

iPad 2 > Apple 30-pin Digital AV Adapter > HDMI cable > Elgato Game Capture > USB lead > Mac

There's a pretty big delay between what you see on iPad and what you see on Mac. You might also need to connect elgato to a hdmi tv or something to hear the sound in real-time.

Yes, Elgato has it's own capture software for both Mac and PC.

Nice, I was just about to show all the other options you have, the other methods I've tried.

Here's a short demo of the software that comes with it:

    2. DisplayRecorder
    3. Reflector

The recording methods I've tried in order of best to worst:

    1. Nothing much works perfectly.
    2. OS X built in Quicktime screen recorder.
    3. Screenflick
    4. Some other screen recorders I forget the name of.
    4. Snapz Pro X
    5. 5D MkII filming iPad screen.
    6. Sony HD filming iPad screen.
    7. Draw each frame by hand onto A4 paper, scan, re-animate in After Effects.
    8. Watch iPad screen and describe the action to anyone willing to listen.
    9. Ouija Board.
    10. Intercessory Prayer / Seance.
    11. Alcoholism.

Get my Elgato + Digital AV Adapter, but I can't figure out how to record at 60fps ?

    iPad3 >> AV Adaptor > HDMI > Elgato > iMac

The set up works fine, I can record 30fps @ 1080p - but when I stick it into 720p it stays on 30fps ?

Did you manage to record @ 60fps ?

@Socks I have done some 720p 60 fps recording with ps3, but I haven't been able to record @ 60 fps with iPad. What do you need 60 fps for?

Edit: I just managed to record iPad @ 60fps. My settings are:

I've got some stuff that runs faster than 30fps and it comes out pretty jerky at 30fps.

    I didn't know the Elgato did 1080p @ 60fps, I thought you needed to drop down to 720 to get 60fps ?

Thanks for doing that for me, much appreciated - I'm using identical settings but my 'Output' part will only ever read 30fps ?

What iPad are you using ?

    Cheers for your help.

@Socks I'm using an iPad 2 so the final resolution is under 720p. That's probably why it's able to record it @ 60 fps.

    (Elgato doesn't record 1080p @ 60 fps)

The problems with DisplayRecorder are that 1) it doesen't record in-game audio and 2) it doesen't record 60FPS :(

@Chakku I used to record video with DisplayRecorder and audio from the device using a 3.5 mm jack to 3.5 mm jack cable (plugged in the mac mic input).

    Oh, that's a good idea! :)

But did the lower FPS hinder the recording? :/

    ??

I'm using the Elgato box - not DisplayRecorder ?

@Chakku What I think is that 30fps is good enough in most cases. You won't probably be uploading a 60fps video anywhere.

Yep, 90% of the time 30fps is fine.
