Blame game

As a longtime GS veteran, I've noticed a trend around this new crop of users. I see alot of blaming GS for everything. If some screws up their code, it's a bug, if someone doesn't take the time to read Apple's documents on being a developer and how to install profiles, it's some how GS's problem, even though it has nothing to do with GS. I saw three threads this week on submitting to the Apple's App Store and others and myself directed them to Apple's info on what to do and they blew it off. To all new users, game developing is hard work, takes time and persistence and learning. Remember the good folks who help are volunteers and owe you nothing. Please do not put urgent in your thread title as that will have the opposite effect. This isn't and ER there are no urgent life and death cases. Show some respect and gratitude to the good people who take the time to help their very competition to help them compete with them. This fact alone tells you the character of the people who help. And how did these great people learn, they read the Apple documentation, the read the cookbook, they read the google store documents, they read the Amazon documents. In others words they put in the work! Follow their example and put in work of your own. Trust me when I say, we veterans see users come and go. In fact there are only a small handful of us who are still here determined to build a body of work. We know most of you won't be here in a year as most give up and quit. We know this because we see this over and over through the years. Do you want to be a successful developer, stop blaming, start working harder and be a problem solver and not a problem creator. Keep dreaming and realize dreaming is hard, very hard and only few reach their dreams. This is life and the realities of it.

You say all that, but I know for certain that GameSalad version 0.10.1 gave me an itchy scalp.

@Socks, consider yourself lucky that it's just your scalp that is itchy! :)
  • gamesfuagamesfua Member Posts: 723
@jamie_c are you suffering from the same thing i'm suffering from? So nice to hear others with the same itchy "area." Although to be honest i can't tell if it was GS's fault or that trip to amsterdam? Thoughts?

    Dear omnipotent GameSalad veteran @fryingbaconstudios,
apologies for my tone and sarcasm, but I'm one of those people you essentially cast out as unappreciative and lazy. I'm one of those people who apparently ignored your wise, wise, sage like, wisdom of reading an apple manual (to which I did by the way- and it didn't answer a number of my questions).
Please point out where I (or many others) blamed GameSalad for anything? Please point out to me where I (or many others) haven't been appreciative of the incredible knowledge that users on these forums have given me (us)? As a matter of fact, if you look at all of my posts, I hand out some of the kindest thank you's around. And they are deep from the heart sincere. Many people in this very thread have helped me immensely and I am forever in their debt and gratitude. I am simply amazed and awe struck over the talent and helpful nature of these phenomenal people. I can actually even point out 3 of these people (right in here, in this thread @socks, @RP, @braydon_sfx) in particular who made my game a reality thanks to their patience and knowledge.
They are an inspiration to me. They make me want to push myself harder. Think bigger. Try to be more than what I am.
I respect them- and they didn't have to even ask me to.
    Like in your line:
"Show some respect and gratitude to the good people who take the time to help..."
I respect them because their response to the question "How do I get to xyz?" wasn't "buy a map, it's not that hard." Their immediate assumption wasn't, "they're lazy."
I respect your knowledge. And there's no denying it, you know more than me. A lot more! But when someone asked a question about publishing, I tried my best to give them as many resources that I could. Does that make me anymore right than you? No. Of course not. It's all opinion on what classifies good teaching methods and guidance. But I also didn't rant to the world about how incredible you are because you took time to read manuals (and assume others haven't). Or a lecture on what work ethic is.
I've worked in the film industry for over 10 years. I directed and edited television commercials, did pre visualization for movies, etc. And not little projects here. I'm talking about movie trailers you see in the theater. I'm not cable access professional here- I'm the real deal. I'm saying all of this not to give myself any pride, I'm saying it as an example.
When I'm in a forum about editing and someone asks even the most basic question, "How do I l output my edit."
My response is not "Read a book." Even though clearly the answer is in the manual.
My response is not "Respect your elders, don't ask such things! Oh these kids these days and just wanting the quick way out! They don't have the same 1950's values that I have, that it's not the end result that means anything- it's more about how accurate I can use my hammer."
No. My response details to the best of my abilities how to do so and ends with encouraging words about where and how they can gain self sufficiency in finding the answers on their own." Why do I do this? A number of reasons. But one of the biggies is that I've been around the block. I know secrets and shortcuts, things to avoid, things to look for, that no manual can say.
Simply put, if my friend lives in neighborhood XYZ and I've never been there- and we're driving to that neighborhood. Is it wrong of me to ask "hey do you know any shortcuts to XYZ, or can you guide me there?" Instead of him just blurting out, "Pull off to the side of the road and go read a map, it's not hard... AND RESPECT ME!"
I understand that some may argue that only encourages people to rely on the forums and not themselves. Fine. Great. But maybe there's something in my editor example. Help them if you can or want, and encourage them to move forward on their own.
    That's what a mentor is.
    That's a true teacher.
That's someone you respect and get inspired by. To get excited about learning on your own.

Apologies for this reply, but when someone essentially calls me ungrateful and not respectful- it's an insult to what all of these incredible people on GS have given me. Not to be too dramatic here, but I consider all of you family to me. Because you were there for me when I needed you most. You helped me make a dream of mine come true.
And you didn't demand respect in return... you earned it... you deserved it!
So thank you to everyone, even you @fryingbaconstudios. You have helped me greatly in the past. And contrary to your rant, I appreciate your efforts.

This was a generic post and if you don't fit the profile, then what is the problem? anatomyofdreams, so now we're going to brag about experience. Did I mention I was a network sitcom television writer? So if we want to have a pissing contest about who climbed the foot chain higher, I can do that. Also, the first amendment provides me the right to my voice and my option and you don't have to like it and I could care less if anyone likes it or not. If the answers aren't in the documents then how does anyone know or find the answer? I must be some kind of super genius, which I'm not, because I always manage to have found them. Hmmm. Oh well, I'll just go back to my life and enjoy...

Oh boy another argument, can't wait to jump on this one. It's only about someone complaining about someone else complaining because he didn't agree to the oringinal complaint. :)

    @FryingBaconStudio

Although what you may have notice and what I have notice is the growing trend of non serious answers, so for someone needing an anwser, this could be annoying or disrespectful towards them. So they may blow off a legit answer because they feel it might be another non serious answer. Happens all the time. But other then that what you said was true but when you make such a post be prepared to have people disagree like @anatomyofdreams and a few others because not everyone like strawberry Flavoured ice-cream either.

@fryingbaconstudios what is going on? I never waved my credentials around. I merely said that because its an area i have experience in. A place where i can be a "veteran." So i can show how i believe forum responses can go. At no point did i say "look at me! Look how important i am." I even said, "i'm not saying this out of pride but merely as an example..."
Nor did i ever say you weren't entitled to your opinion. Nor am i asking you not to have an opinion. Nor am i stating you are wrong. I said it a few times in my post that these are all merely opinions of lending support and guidance. No where do i state mine is more just or more right.
I also don't believe (aside from the opening joke) that my tone was argumentative. There was no name calling. Nothing but a different perspective. One that has actually gotten a few agrees and likes. I even thanked you at the end!
So i'm confused where literally ANY of the statements you made are coming from. Am i not entitled to respond to a post you've made? You said it was general in nature. But it wasn't. You listed specific forum posts- one of which i was a part of. You then talked about giving people respect for their help.
Am i not allowed to defend that? Even if i wasn't a part of the posts you mentioned- do i not have a right to offer an opinion for fellow forum posters?
Again i'm going to stress that my tone is peaceful here. No fight. No aggression.
And i'm happy you can find answers on your own. Thats great. Really is. Others can't. Or maybe too intimidated. Or maybe they want advice over answers. Or maybe a guiding touch to get them started. If every answer can be found somewhere else- i ask you then, what is the point of a forum? Should we label the forums, "Place to have automatic response of "go read a manual."

P.S. I think thats awesome that you were a writer! Its been a dream of mine! Thats really incredible. Sincerely.
    :)

I did enjoy your rather dramatic ending however. Reminded me of a child storming up to his room. And yes, this sentence is the only aggressive thing i've said or will say. I just found it kind of funny.

You know why non serious answers happen? It's because I'm not the only one who notices the laziness. Once again this is not an implication on all, just most. Oh, trust me I can dish it out and I can take it. To be offended by something one was not personally named in is irrational to me. When I want to get personal, I'll call someone out with their handle, just as I did. Everyone is entitled to their voice and I respect that and do not get offended at all but I will defend my points in a debate, just as I would expect others to do the same. Debate is how we learn and hash out truths. My desire is for others to be prepared to achieve and sometimes good advice isn't always pleasant but still good for us. I only speak from my experience.

What do you think I am, some kind of cheap 'likes' whore ? How dare you! I've never been so insulted in my life - and I'm sure others will agree* with me that this accusation of yours is unfounded.

    Wow! FryingBaconStudios,
Which sitcoms did you write on? Can I get your episodes on YouTube?
    I'd love to watch them!

    It’s not a bug – it’s an undocumented feature

That, my friend, is Tony The Spider™

Sure he looks like a badly drawn spider knocked up in under a minute in a stolen copy of Photoshop by a partially drunk forum member, but let me assure you he's more than that, sure Disney and Pixar didn't return my emails but that's not to say that in a couple of years Tony The Spider™ won't be a household name in the same way that MickeyTheCat and TheDisturbingHand are.
