Accelerometer Control Help

So I watched a video tutorial on how to use the accelerometer for moving controls, and one part confused me. It said that for moving up and down you use the x-attribute and for moving left and right you use the y-attribute. What gives? If I'm not mistaken, the X controls side to side movement and the Y controls Up and down. Am I missing something?

    The accelerometer has X, Y and Z output, it's not the same as the X and Y co-ordinates in a flat 2D plane.

    Ah ok then that makes sense.
