Does anybody who knows GIMP know how to start a project on a transparent background?

Cropping after erasing causes unwanted edges...

Before you start drawing anything, go to Colors > Colors to Alpha. The default color should be white. Hit OK. Your background will be transparent.

And if you have an image, say picture with white background, you can right click on theimage and color that are to alpha and get rid of everthing but the actual image that you want
  • When you create a new image you can also set it right there below the image size.

    File > New

    under the image size

    Advanced Options > Fill with:

    and select transparency
