How can I smooth the menu transition?

in Working with GS (Mac)
I have an off screen menu the pops up when you click a button. It's a whole page background with lots of smaller square buttons on it. The problem is that the background seems to arrive slightly after the buttons so you see a quick flash of all the buttons on their own. It's really really fast but it still makes it look a bit messy. Has anyone got a way of getting round this? Thanks!

    That's a really good point sorry I forgot to mention that the items on the menu need to change so they are all separate instances of an actor. At the moment I'm trying to make the scene background the same colour as the menu background, and make the button that brings up the menu turn the main background alpha to 0. It's a lot better but still not perfect.
