so when are these BIG "GS updates" ready??

Is it me, or aren't there any promised updates?
Last year I bought a pro membership because I finally saw the roadmap and they made announcements about the new engine and other great stuff. So far I havent seen major updates, just the overscan feature and some distribution updates, but nothing performence wise or new ellements that we can use to build our games.

The new engine is coming - we've seen it in action. As of when, I'm not sure. Ice Cap Games, GameSalad's publishing arm, has apps that are currently running the new engine. It's pretty sweet and very fast. But while GameSalad has been perfecting the new engine, I'm glad they've kept pushing out new features such as Universal Binaries. UB was huge - we've been asking for that for a long while now. It also looks like we're getting an Android ad service in the next update, too.

Don't get my wrong, I want the new engine too. But I'd rather have them make sure it's perfect before they release it to us. So I'll be ready when it's ready. :-)

I think all of their last few releases have had engine optimisations ... That remains a huge priority and even with a new engine (which is likely to still be some way off) they are still concentrating on engine optimisations as this will still be used.

The top asked for things were engine optimisations (which they keep doing on each release), Universal Binaries (which was just released) and Android monetization which is due for release in the imminent release.

Is there an ETA ? Like 4 months? 6 months? :ar!
  • tenrdrmertenrdrmer Member, Sous Chef, Senior Sous-Chef Posts: 9,934
No eta on the new engine. They are trying to improve the backwards comparability I think for old projects. When they released the to fat to fly update running the new engine they said it took a lot of work to get it running on the new engine. While I'm sure everyone here would say just release it already and let us deal with it. There would be as many or more throwing a for they cannot just publish as is using the new engine.

I didn't realise Too Fat To Fly was made on the new engine, worryingly it still contained the interpolation glitch ! I hope things like that don't make it though to the new engine !

What engine optimizations have there been in the last few releases ?

I'd seriously be happy with the performance on the Too Fat to Fly demo, I have a couple endless runners that need a little more boost in the performance handling and we are good to go, but these games I made over a year ago . I guess a few more months wont kill me as long as we get it

It's very hard to meet a deadline. We had an enteral time deadlines that we had to meet. It's not easy, and sometimes we had to go over it to get a better working feature. I would imagine it's the same with GS. They have the same type of thing. They missed thier dead line that they planned for and now they are focusing on making it better.

Because oneday i am going to come on these forums and see a new thread in yellow that says introducing new engine. And I will smile.

But still for a corporation/ company like Gamesalad, where thousands of developers use it, with many serious competitors, they need to try to meet the deadline or at least release updates frequently. That being said, i will not be leaving Gamesalad for another year before i may take up programming.

They do make improvements to the engine with every release. I think even the UB launch included optimizations on server side with regards to the published apps. They may not be much but over time they do add up.

You know I see you and a few others bring this glitch up all the time.

I have been using GS for 2.5 years now and have hardly if ever experienced this glitch to any degree that actually concerned me. I'm not discounting how serious you feel this is. I just don't understand. I use interpolate all the time as much as possible and don't have any issues I'm concerned about with it.

Cheers for the answer, I wasn't aware of these improvements as I'd not noticed them announced anywhere - but I think the OP was more asking about core functionality of GameSalad creator (". . . nothing performence wise or new ellements that we can use to build our games . . .") rather than behind the scenes improvement on the publishing side (which of course is welcome too).

Yeah, I use it as a placeholder for those troubling little glitches / bugs that appear in version after version, it's often the first example that comes to mind when making a point about known bugs.

In this case ('The Too Far To Fly' games) I mention it because I would have thought / hoped it wouldn't have made it through to the new engine, but to be honest I know so little about how the process of coding a new engine works and at what stage in development they are (and so on) that it may very well be a non-issue.

Like I say, it's not a life or death thing, it's just the first example I reach for to highlight one of these perennial bugs, but it mays as well be the random animate frames rates or buggy asset deletion issues (etc). Like you say some people won't be troubled by little glitches in fades and/or audio ramps while others will find them unacceptable as much as some will salivate over UBs while others will be indifferent to them (etc) there's probably no two people who use GameSalad the same way.

10.2 (the upcoming release) should introduce tangible engine improvements to both iOS and Android, as well as an update to HTML5. While many improvements are made in the architecture that aren't always called out, as Tenrdrmer stated, these are, given their relative magnitude.

Results may vary, but QA has seen some nice improvements in load times as well as gameplay.
    Thank you for your answer!
Do you know if there will be any improvement on the sound, for example the kindle fire? Because those kind of tablets have so much audio lag

@Approw - The sound problems, as far as I know, as unfixable on GS's end. (Please correct me if I'm wrong, it's been awhile.)

@SaladStraightShooter - Awesome! Any chance we could get some upcoming release notes sometime soon? B-)

    @blorsch - =)) You had me there for a second :P
On a side note, no multiplayer for quite awhile :)
