Using Xbox 360 controller for an OS X game

Hi, I'm making an OS X game for my class project. Since my game will use various buttons for different action, I thought about mapping it to a Xbox 360 controller. Is that possible in gamesalad?

Thanks.

Can you assign the controller buttons to be recognized as keyboard buttons in your Mac?
If so, then you might be able to work something out.

i think it's definitely possible, though i really wish game salad would have a similar functionality built into it. I think i'll try it on Windows 8 since it allows better Xbox360 Controller compatibility.

You don't need Gamesalad to do this. Just download http://www.macupdate.com/app/mac/24762/xbox-360-controller-driver

That can map keyboard keys to the 360 controller. Just make sure you have a wired 360 controller (not just the charging wire you plug in, that is only for charging not connecting) or microsoft makes a USB 360 wireless receiver you can buy.

Also, I may be wrong but I'm pretty sure you need a Mac developers account ($99 I think) in order to build for a Mac even if its your own. Someone correct me if I'm wrong

Update: Just checked, i do need a developer account. Luckily my friend is a developer so ill just ask him to do it for me.

I think i can develop and run it without developer account as long as i am not publishing on AppStore which i doubt i will.

It's absolutely possible. As @dr2391 said above, grab the Microsoft X360 Controller drivers for Mac. And if it doesn't allow you to map to keys, just grab the app Joystick Mapper from the App Store on your Mac. It'll allow you to map any key to any button.

Then in GameSalad just use your regular control methods on key press "UP", etc. Then map it using the App.

I've had great luck with this App as I've set it up with Minecraft and even World of Warcraft. Works perfectly.

Thanks a lot guys, i'll play with the settings to see best possible combination. My game is part platformer, part hack and slash so will definitely need to use Xbox controller. Really appreciate all the replies.

You can't do this with a wireless controller without additional hardware because the XBOX 360 controller does not use bluetooth and uses proprietary technology instead.

You have to get this: http://www.amazon.com/Xbox-360-Wireless-Gaming-Receiver-Windows/dp/B000HZFCT2

A wired controller is probably possible so long as you map keyboard presses to the individual keys like previous people have said.
