PNG Alternative? Small-sized, transparent images...

What image formats does GS support? The formats I require should support transparency. Looking for most efficient file size for images of icon-sized dimensions.
Problem: I've created a sprite library of PNGs. Almost all of them are under 25px by 40px and almost all of them have a file size in excess of 80kb. This is unacceptable and I must find an alternative.
"PNGs are best suited for images with large areas of solid colours and defined boundaries (such as logos). Unlike JPG files, they are not suited for storing photographic image data."
Aside: I've used photoshop to produce these files. Would anyone recommend one of the PNG file-reducing apps listed here? http://how-to.wikia.com/wiki/How_to_reduce_the_file_size_of_a_PNG_file
Ideally, I would like to use photoshop and a better export format.
Thanks in advance.
