App Rejected

Hello,

My app "Quote Paper" got rejected last week! Here is the reason......

2.12: Apps that are not very useful, are simply web sites bundled as apps, or do not provide any lasting entertainment value may be rejected

"We found that your app only provides a very limited set of features. It only displays images. While we value simplicity, we consider simplicity to be uncomplicated - not limited in features and functionality.

It would be appropriate to implement a saving features instead of requiring the user to take a screenshot. It would also be beneficial to display a UI controls page. Without this the user can be confused on the apps controls.

We understand that there are no hard and fast rules to define useful or entertaining, but Apple and Apple customers expect apps to provide a really great user experience. Apps should provide valuable utility or entertainment, draw people in by offering compelling capabilities or content, or enable people to do something they couldn't do before or in a way they couldn't do it before.

We encourage you to review your app concept and evaluate whether you can incorporate additional content and features to be in compliance with the Guidelines. For information on the basics of creating great apps, watch the video The Ingredients of Great Apps.If you feel we didn't understand the features of your app, or that we missed key functionality, and your app was incorrectly rejected, you may appeal to the App Review Board."

If anyone has any idea of features or things that I should add to it to make it have more to do.

This app is just a simple display of hi-res hand made wallpaper.

Thanks
Conner

I can't exactly give you advice on what to add to bolster your chances of getting the app accepted. However, I can tell you that there is a myriad of "background" apps already on the app store that are likely more sophisticated and popular then Apple perceives your app is, and will be. I can sort of understand Apple's premise, as it doesn't want certain categories to be too saturated with apps trying to offer services that others strive to deliver as well. I guess what Apple is saying in a nutshell is that your app does not offer anything unique or anything advantageous over other background apps of the sort.

Yeah I know what you mean!

It is just that the app took a very long time to make and one main reason is because I made the wallpapers by hand.

    Thanks Again

It sounds to me that they are taking issue with the functionality.
I imagine if within the app, you had the ability to use iOS conventions like a long-press on the image to open a context menu that allowed the user to save the image instead of requiring a screen shot, they would not take issue.
Apple has been known to require one way of doing certain things.
It sounds like you stumbled on one of those cases.

Of course, you can't save the picture with GameSalad so that's not a possibility.

Maybe you could (a) remove the instructions about taking a screenshot and (b) have a button that allows the user to "save" their favorite image. Then you could have a separate scene with one or more saved images. Sort of a "favorites" page. And if you add music (don't know if you already have music) it might help Apple feel it was more than just a slideshow.

My advice is to ditch the idea. The functionality is not there to make it work - too much compromise.

I have learned to make smaller versions of an idea and see if Apple approves them so that I avoid wasting large amounts of time on a risky play. Some genres are more risky than others. Do your research, analyse success and avoid risky concepts.

Build on your experience to make smarter choices about what apps to build and what not to build.

Everyone has different interpretations of what is an acceptable feature set for an app. But there is one interpretation that matters and that is Apple's.

That being said there is nothing wrong with a risk if the idea is an innovative/new/exciting one. But 'wallpapers' won't cut it.

Well said. It was pretty bold of you to do a wallpaper app with gamesalad. I made a hearing test app with gamesalad but got rejected for the same reason, with additional reasons. Apple can be stingy when it comes to such apps

Conner, the quote site looks great. And I'm impressed with all of the projects you're working on (http://www.connersprojects.com).

Just a suggestion as far as grammar goes... change this:
Do you know of encouraging quote well summit and I may make it in to a Wallpaper!
    To this:
Do you know of an encouraging quote? Well, submit it and I may make it into a wallpaper!
You might also want to have a field for the quote source in case people know it.

The websites are brilliant! If you don't mind me asking, Do you code them or use a program? & How do you host your websites and get your domain names?
