Interesting device stats ios and android

So apparently gen 3 ios devices (ipad1, 3gs, ipod3) only account for 4% of devices. This is a sample of 4 million devices that are playing games made with Unity. Good to know.

Yeah I'm an ios caveman too :) Still testing on an ipad1 and ipod 3 here.

But at least we know if it plays smoothly on those devices it should play ultra smooth on gen 4 and above.

Yep, they are the studio reference monitors of the iOS world, get things working well on them and your app will translate well to all other iOS devices.

:)) Apple (successfully :( ) tried hard to alienate iPad 2 owners by releasing the iPad 3...then the iPad 4 a few months later making the iPad 2 seem obsolete, HOWEVER, the iPad 2 has a whopping 3% more users than BOTH the iPad 3 AND iPad 4 combined! >:)

    (I'm waiting on the iPad 5 ;) )

Retina display for an additional 100 bucks? I can see the general buyer wanting the iPad 2 much more than the iPad 3 or 4.

Who needs to buy a new iPad every year...... No one.

Lol.. In my opinion, we should keep developing for old devices until there are three devices ahead of them. For example, no more 3GS, since there are the 4, 4s, and 5 after it. However, there are only two iPads after the 2nd. Same goes for most Apple lines.

(Not me) You'd be amazed at how loyal some Apple fans are... And remember, there are 2 iPad generations per year now, so we'll have to buy them twice as fast! ;)

I can't really consider the iPad 4 (although Apple does) as a standalone generation- more of an iPad 3S or something. When you consider the advancements from the iPad 1 to the iPad 2 (much faster chip, gfx, much thinner-the iPad 1 was quite bulky, smart cover, dual cameras- the iPad 1 had none, etc.), vs the relatively minimal (just retina display, processor and improved camera lens) and the highly minimal improvement to the iPad 4 (just processor and enhanced front camera, and the widely unsupported lighting port), you'll notice that the improvements are degrading over time. The iPad 2 had a plethora of advancements, while the iPad 4 was some sorry excuse of throwing in the lightning connector into the latest iPad...

Did you know my iPad 2 has the same chip as my iPhone 4S (believe me, I'm actively using my iPhone 4S, and no speed problems at all)?

Trust me, it's not going anywhere anytime soon ;)
(Well, until the iPad 5 comes out. Once that comes out, I'm switching to that and handing down the still quite usable iPad 2 :P )

The ipad refresh cycle has become similar to the Mac cycle. It gets updated with a processor bump here and there, but the casing is changed every few years. I think most are fine with that, get an ipad when you need it, be sure you will be supported for the next 2-3 years.

@Chakku - So.. we agree, it's not going out until the iPad 5.
