What does resolution independence mean when you check it in gamesalad?

I just noticed for some reason that there is a checkbox that says resolution independence on it. What does that mean?

Resolution independence is what takes your art art and makes half sized images to be displayed on non retina devices. It's an iOS only feature

So would it actually make more sense to not tick that box but use retina sized images anyway? It would seem ticking it would only increase your game size by 25% due to the increased number of images in the project

@impactblue if resolution independence is not checked, and you use a retina image, you will have to resize it yourself to fit the screen.

Although the downloaded app would be larger, the app would use the smaller sized images on the non-retina devices, which would use less memory during run time.
