Hey guys, I was reviewing my notes when I saw a reminder of new app requirements of retina display quality for all new apps and updates. How would this impact the GS community? I. Other words, how much additional work will it entail in order to meet the requirements?

Retina graphics must be imported at twice the size of non-retina graphics.

  • So, are you saying that when we import images into GS, they have to be double the size we want them to be?

@ingenious.applications - Yes, that's correct. Make sure Resolution Independence is checked, though.

Yes, and as part of your "new ape requirements", double the bananas will be needed as well.
  • Fair enough, but then I have to wonder...how would that affect things within GS? For example, I use the spawn actor behavior a fair amount. Since images are double the size I would want them to be, that could screw things up. I don't understand what independant resolution is, but will checking that box solve this problem?

Given that the requirement also extends to updates, will I also need to go through each image in my app find wherever the option for independent resolution is to enable it?

Thanks, guys. You've been a huge help thus far!

Ahh, typos... Where would we be without them :P
    Fixed it, thanks

If you double the image size and replace the old images, your actors should stay the same size.

With Resolution Independence checked, if you make a image for your actor at double the size, then bring it into the image section of the creator, then drag that up to the actor section to start building the actor; then GS will make the actor half the image size.

So you want a 40x40 actor and you make an 80x80 image for it. When you drag that image into the actor section it will make the actor 40x40.

    Hope that's helpful.

Resolution independence allows GS to keep the double-size (higher resolution) images for retina devices and to downscale them for non-retina devices. As @DeadlySeriousMedia explained, just import them at double-size and then forget about them. Set up your actors as you normally would.

So...just to make sure I understand you correctly, I shouldn't have to delete and then re-add all of the images in my app...just overwrite the image file with the newer, resolution independent file (at exactly double the size)? I think that deleting an image file would delete all actors based on that image, so being able to overwrite and have it work out in that manner would be best.

    Yup, just overwrite.
  • While I don't think it'll happen, if I were able to get my app submitted by the end of the month, would I still have to update all of my images during an update....or just any new content?
  • Is resolution independence a newer feature? I was going to take a crack at this conversion tonight, but I don't see it. Since I have an older Mac mini, I currently use GS version 9.94.
