E3 Expo 2013 Who's-ah go'n?

RPRP Member Posts: 1,990
E3 is just two months away.

There should be some awesome things going down this year!
Any folks here planning on going? If so, we should get some peeps to meet up there.

There was a Gordon Bierch above the south hall entrance years ago, but I think they pulled the bars/pubs out of the convention center, but there is plenty of places nearby that cater to anyone that would like to meet up and have a cup 'o grog. Lots of great places to eat. Little Tokyo has undergone a resurgence in recent years. There is a lot of great restaurants there as well as a traditional video game arcade (with import cabinets). How cool is that?

If you plan on going or will be in the LA area during that time, hit up this thread.

SWMBO has reminded me I've had a few Goose Islands tonight and that despite my thoughts on the matter I'm not going, but I didn't want to go anyway!. "goes off to cry quietly"
  • I could easily be missing something, but I was always under the impression that only game developers were allowed into E3...at least for recent years. I realize that we are technically game developers, but I didn't know it counted for us unless we had some sort of major hit in the stores.

Yes, E3 is for industry professionals. Which I am happy to say I am (also why I'm such a non-sugar coating, hard-nosed meanie). I've been going to E3 off and on since '96 and the ESA seems to agree that I'm more than eligible (until I blow my cover). E3 is not just for large companies, publishers, studios and "developers". Of course it helps that I am a registered entity with some big name history, although the latter is not particularly necessary. If you are interested in going and depending on your profession/employment you may be eligible.

Go to the registration section and see if you meet any of the criteria. The ESA has gotten a lot more strict on eligibility. A few years back 2006 I think, it was nuts. Gamestop employees and blogers from all over the US/world flodded the place. This was when E3 crashed and it went through a restructure, ultimatley leaving E3 (media and business summit) scattered all over hotles, studios, warehouses and aiports all over LA. After they brought the Expo back to the convention center In 2009, it was only 25% of the gamefan crazed crowd (thank goodness). Sadly, E3 is not how it used to be before, the developer workshops have all gone way of GDC. E3 is now more geared to showcasing to media outlets than being a pratical industy trade show (basically what CES still is and parts of GDC), but there is still lots of cool things, tech and people to meet and discover. The big bonus being you are surrounded in games, almost like you can eat and breath it (ouch..ow)

Believe it or not there are plenty of in-industry folks that use GameSalad. It is just one of the tools I use for creation.
    :)

It's crazy to think who Popcap games has come along. This Plants vs. Zombies display was at the main entrance. Just think of how much cha-ching was dropped for this.

Not only did they have a huge banner and column displays, they took up valuable floor space in the main entryway (which normally has a some cool car or traditional artistry on display). Not to mention the floorspace they have inside showroom floor.

For sure. I'll be there tomorrow afternoon. I think I'll skip Wednesday and go again on Thursday. Best meeting point is probably South Hall. I guess by the Plants vs. Zombies display. It's easy to find. I'll pm ya.

Booth babes Zombie style. These guys really were in character, lunging at the fence attempting to catch another snack when possible.

Oculus Rift = Awesome. EVE-VR a space flight sim built from the ground up for the Oculus Rift. The BEST flight sim I have ever experienced. Imagine being able to check your six as you normally would. Look over your shoulder. I could never get tired of this.
