I work for a software company, and one of the bigger things we always address, is what "pain" does someone have?
Example: Someone is a secretary, but is on the move constantly, so carrying a notebook around is just not something she wants to do, so what does she need? Something small for taking notes on. She has a smart phone, why not use a note-taking app?
It's things like this that can get you on the right path, even in the realm of games. What games do people want to see? What sort of gameplay is in demand right now? Can you fix this "pain" of theirs?
My method has always been related to games. More specifically, if you are playing a game that you feel something is missing...or you have the thought of "wouldn't it be cool if you could _______." Take those thoughts and run with them.
Think of a game that you really love. (probably best to think of one for mobile devices), think about what you don't like about it and what you love about it. Then think about what you really wish they could add. Build your game around that idea.

You just gave me a great idea.
There are a lot of these threads asking for creative advice.
What do these people need? An app that generates app ideas based on what is currently top grossing, top paid, or other parameters you specify.
I'll sell it to developers and make a killing.
