The other forum for GameSalad

Just so everyone is aware, there is a new forum for GS development discussion.
http://www.gsproforum.com/

There seems to be a little ill-will going around about this, but this new forum is just another tool freely available for sharing GS info. If you got a bit irritated by some of the strong personalities, that's actually understandable, but don't let that stand in the way of making progress in your GameSalad development skills.

Even if you don't join the GS Pro Forum, it is starting to build up as a good, easy to navigate resource, and could be a good place for you to just lurk.

The new forum is certainly not mine, it was created Synthesis, and he isn't making money with it (as far as I can tell), just trying to help us all.

    What the point? I don't see why I would want two forums to search for answers. Is this only for pro members?
  • iDeveloperziDeveloperz Member Posts: 1,169
    No, it was because hinhonikin (whatever) was banned so they made it so they could "Speak their minds".

    There is no point in it really.

    This forum is rather slow and very idiosyncratic in it's nature but is is beautifully GS and we certainly don't really need another. But it would be great to get more advanced search sorted as it tends to be hard to keep track of things./

    I have signed up on that forum because when I first went there and looked around I found some of the posts by hunn and syn to be pretty informative. I also like the layout of that forum as it is more organized. I think you can also attach screenshots or other images. I have been put off by hunn a number of times, so I may just be a glutton for punishment seeing as I signed up. I will continue to stand up for what I feel is right and that hasn't changed, but I want to learn as much as I can about game design using GS and the "pro" forum (not just for pro's) seems to be another source of knowledge. This forum is still my safari home page and my #1 internet hangout and will continue to be.

    The unfortunate thing is that many of hunn's criticisms about the format of this forum are dead on. I wish he could see that his treatment of the great people on this forum have caused many of us to tune him out (understandably so). I do wish this forum had many of the features of the "pro" forum, but I hope that the vibe of this forum continues to be fun as well as informative. As soon as this feels like work I probably won't do it anymore - sometimes feels like the proponents of the "pro" forum want this to be all work and no fun.

    Anyways, I wouldn't "boycott" it if I were you, but this is the place to be if you ask me!

    Wow, this is worse than I thought.

    It's not about competition, or loyalty. I enjoy this forum, but often it is darn hard to locate tips I remember from just a few weeks back, and the other has some very nice features.

    Hunn pissed me off on a thread that has since been deleted, but I don't care about him, I'm just interested in info. And the other is not hunn's forum, he just posts there... like he still does here.

    Ahhh, I'd never noticed that. Thanks.

    We know some of you are boycotting the site for whatever reason. Very well...that is your prerogative.

    The point of the new forum was not to be in "competition" with this forum...the point of the site was to provide a second resource for GS development. This new forum allows you to do many things that this forum cannot do...such as post pictures, share files, track posts, private messaging and lots more.

    It is not exclusive to "pro" members and its free to use. The term "pro" really just means its more focused around creating GameSalad games to make money.

    We are in the process of working to try to put a "wrapper" on the forum to allow you to have access to game advertising and so on...that will be free. We have many other things planned for the forum down the road.

    So for those of you who feel "threatened" or "offended" by the thought of an independent forum board outside of GameSalad Inc...well...can't help you there. This forum wouldn't be the first "independent" forum to pop up around a software. Plus...last I checked...it wasn't a crime to subscribe to more than one forum.

    So I invite you to come on over and check it out. There might be some stuff you like. Its still growing and the community is young...but it has great potential to be ANOTHER tool to help you develop great GameSalad apps.

    You could also develop it into an actual website instead of an online fourm>

    - Home
    - Tutorials
    - Forum
    - Suggestions

    etc

    @TSB...
    It is your choice if you want to not use the new forum or if you wish to remain "loyal" to GS.com. But it seems that every time it is mentioned...you are VERY quick to chime in negatively...for what reason I don't know other than maybe you don't like me or Hunn or disagree with everything we say. BTW...its NOT MY FORUM...its whoever's forum. I just administrate it, keep the lights on, and pay the "light bill"...and working to put some new custom feature in it to allows the community more opportunities for indie game promotion.

    @iDev...
    Yes...in time. But it all takes time and energy. Some of what you talk about is already there...ie. suggestions, tips, etc. New stuff everyday it seems. But its only a couple weeks old...so give it some time. Also...the site existed a month prior to Hunnenkoenig's 24 hour ban. They had nothing to do with each other. Hunn is a moderator on the forum and was the first member (outside of admin)...that is all.
  • iDeveloperziDeveloperz Member Posts: 1,169
    Oh right, sorry i thought it was because of hunns ban.

    i think what Tshirt is trying to say is that you own it, not that its your forum in that way.

    hmm.. I'd never noticed the 'add this topic to my favourites' button...may start using that. Up till now I've simply got a GS bookmarks folder in firefox, full of links to useful wiki and forum entries....

    May give the other forum ago at some point... obviously be great if the GS forum added a tiny bit more functionality... Though I kinda like the simple way it works, and does what it does. You can search it, make posts, and reply...

    I've worked with vendors in the past/present (who also operated a forum for their product), who liked to squash posts which may have discussed something that reflect negatively on their business (Ie, they would have deleted the 3.3.1 thread as well as this one), or if someone asked a question, they would immediately answer with a bogus response, close the thread, and consider it resolved (even though it wasn't). Although I was disappointed that the 3.3.1 thread on the forum was closed--its not over yet--they have been more than fair in the operation of this forum.

    I still consider it a conflict of interest, so I welcome any unofficial GS related forum.

    @TSB...
    I stand corrected...it may have been another peer slamming it...My apologies.
    I'm not trying to pick a fight with you. You are a sharp guy with a lot of good insight. You are a trusted source here on GS.com and have helped me in the past...and many other peers appreciate your help as well.

    But by the way...we are NOT a direct "competitor" to GameSalad. What are we selling? What possible revenue could we be taking from GameSalad since we have absolutely no revenue stream from it. Do you think Flashkit.com hurts or helps Adobe Flash? I would think Gendai would welcome more tools to better use their software...which can only help to propel their exposure and relevance.

    My feeling was when I created the forum was to provide a second location to expand on GameSalad. There no way we will every have "ads" or "indie promotion" on this site...or any sort of independent control. Big brother will always have the control and they tend to be hard to get a hold of and slow to implement any changes. With an independent site...the opportunities expand by leaps and bounds to do some things that will never be possible here.

    But this forum (GS.com) will continue to be the "key source" and the "first source" for all things GameSalad. The other forum...is just another tool...with a different "spin" on things. I personally appreciate different spins on things...I try to avoid drinking anyone's "Kool-aid".

    If Gendai wants us to stop referencing or posting about the other forum...they just say the word and I will not making any and all references to it.

    I don't know why this site was started, I just don't see the point (for me). Maybe useful for others.
  • synthesissynthesis Member Posts: 1,693
    @JamesBoucher.

    Sure its thin on content presently...but I think in time...you will seeing GLARING advantages to involving yourself in both forums...and the relevance of having 2 independent sources for information...rather than a single source.

    Ok here is my three cents... yes i said three

    I'm all for multiple forums. How many forums does one game warcraft have?
    243

    Point is when GS grows so will the user base and so will the currently alternative forum.

    I really dont go over there but, as a sign of good faith and to show im not against it I registered long ago. And will continue to stop by.

    However...

    @synth
    Here is the honest truth and the problem rather you admit it or not....

    There is a good community here. The issues that drive you crazy with the GS forums are likely pretty small to most folks including myself. A well established community out weighs that in my opinion.

    The problem is you tend come off sounding like you are talking down to people rather you realize it or not. In fact you usually are right. You gotta realize you could be right 1000 times over and it wouldn't matter people don't wanna be proven wrong ... ever.

    You dont need to try to transfer everyone over. People like it here.
    If they want they will come but you are doing more damage trying to defend yourself....trust me.

    Its comments like "remain "loyal" to GS.com" that sound antagonistic.

    I would also avoid an argument with TSB too. You wont win any points there either....... even if you are 100% in the right.

    Im not trying to piss in your potato chips or anything... Heck if you release a game ill download it and review it. If you lived near me I'd meet up to hang out and discuss this in person. I have nothing against you. Im just saying from a third party point of view why things must always seem a little uphill here for you.

    Ah, just to be fair, and clear, Synth really hasn't tried to move people to his forum. I started this thread because I do think the more info, the better. But hey, I have no dog in this, and I sure didn't mean to stir up hard feeling.
  • synthesissynthesis Member Posts: 1,693
    @ James (aka TinyMonster)
    You seem like a good guy. I'm not trying to take sides. I never meant anything I said to say one is better than the other. I like this forum too. I can't say that I'm a "GS.com groupie" or anything as some might appear to be at times...but I do think there are a lot of peers on here that are genuine and want to do great things.

    If I am a bit "razor-like" in my words at times or in my analysis of things...that is something that was taught to me in school...in other words...challenge the status quo and rip at the guts to find the meat of an issue and then use that to build on. This is typical design school training. Some might call it out-of-the box but there is another term...its "Gestault".

    The only issues that I have gotten "edgy" over were ones directly related to the performance of GS as a legitimate development software and the challenge on the general premise that "GS is great because I have no other options" that some people use. There are always options out there...you just have to put your head down and charge through them.

    Personally I think GS as a concept is brilliant but most of my criticisms are in the way it is being executed...and since this is a BETA test of the software and I am paying to be a part of it...I have tried to express "Critically" what I think is best for how GS should mature. Some might find that edgy or unappealing while other may find it insightful.

    My primary criticism was in what does GS want to be...a "taptard" generator or a "Game Engine". This kind of statement isn't about making anyone feel less or not...its about challenging what the true intent of the software is. If its a taptard generator...then I will use it to make taptard games...as I am doing right now. If it is supposed to be a rivaling game engine ...then make it a game engine and get busy on getting it optimized.

    The reason I don't have a game out for you to download is that it has been shelfed because after 2 months of work...I discovered that GS is a taptard generator and not a game engine. It just doesn't have the guts to build complex games with it. My hope is that it will mature quickly and that I will be able to unshelf my first game and get it performing. 1 of 2 things will allow me to do that...either the 3G iPhone is phased out...or GameSalad gets lighter on the processor.

    I do have an app coming out hopefully on Friday. Its native XCode...but since you asked...if you are interested...you can have a look at it here:
    www.spiritApps.com

    Until then...I have a few ideas for GameSalad...but with our spiritApps launch...GS is on hold for me right now...until it stabilizes better. I continue to work with it off and on and am hoping I can get my first title out within a month or so. When I do...I'll be sure to let you know :)

    lets you, me, Hunnenkoenig, Quantumsheep and TSB all bury the hatchet...have a cyber-beer together and move on and do some great things.

    The more info I can get the better - it's always good to have choices. But like anyone, If I don't feel welcome (be it here or any forum) I would move on.

    The main goal should be to create decent games for fun or profit through learning and helping each other. - My 2 cents

    No need to bury any hatchet
    I was never bothered

    I was only offering my opinion on the issue which personally I don't feel involved in.

    Now did you download my game or what

    I personally signed up over at the GS Pro forums because I'm here to learn, and any information I can gather that will help me program games & apps, understand the app market, or any little tid bits of information I can get will only help me excel as what I consider to be a 2nd job.

    TSB has been the absolute most helpful person here, period. He has a wealth of knowledge regarding gamesalad, and I feel like he IS gamesalad :)

    Synthesis also knows his stuff, so while I thoroughly enjoy the community forums here, I signed up over there so that I could spread my wings a bit and learn some of the in's and out's of the industry, and get other people's perspective on where this app market is going, and what options we have out there, especially since the license agreement crisis that happened just last week.

    I appreciate people like Synthesis creating another forum to help others that may want another outlet to go to that may be easier to navigate or gather information. Nothing wrong with that! I don't feel he's coercing anyone into it, so in the end it's up to the user!

    I think TSB would be a valuable addition over there as would be other members, but again, it's all a matter of personal preference and the choice is yours.

    This forum will always be my primary go to, but doesn't hurt to sign up and check out another site. The way it's going now, I think it could prove to be very valuable in the future! :)
