Brain dead days

VGXVGX Member Posts: 796
Sometimes I spend hours at night just staring at the computer listening to music trying to think of ideas for a game and can't think of anything. So I go bed and about an hour or two later ideas just come flooding in my mind, so I quickly run downstairs get the pen and paper out and start drawing and writing thinking to myself this is some good ideas.

The next day I get those ideas and start putting stuff together on Photoshop and half way into it I don't like the ideas anymore. So I look at old stuff I did and try to add some of that to the new ideas and see what magic I can do.

The thing is I have spent the last couple of months doing this and not getting anything done. I have so many designs I just can't think of a solid idea.

I'm sure most people here have gone through some sort of madness. How do you deal with it? How do you focus on your projects?

Do you brainstorm with other people? I think it's easy to get stuck as an individual but if you throw around some of those ideas with other like-minded (or non-like-minded) people you may hear some fresh ideas come out of it.

The way I work when I hit a dead end is get a sheet of sticky notes (large to medium) and a pen (not a pencil).

I sketch out ideas really quick and once I hit a dead end or take a wrong turn I take off the sticky, place it out of the way and start over. No erasing, no looking back. It's a very organic way to see your ideas as you get them. Little detail, loose movement, zero stress.

Once I come up with something I like I put a bit more time into the sketches to flesh it out a bit more along with more detailed ideas to solidify and expand the game's mechanics.

I generally whip out ideas pretty quick but haven't got the time to actually execute them. If you need help developing on an idea or have some assets you don't know what to do with I'd be happy to help. PM me if you want. :)

lol... if I showed you a collage of projects I'm working on it'd look like a pretty mess of colored squares. :(

Hmm it seems like the grahics is for different platformers.

Anywho Why dont you make a platformer where the grahics change in every world ? You already Got the graphics ;)

Its like the movie dantes inferno(cartoon one), the apperance of the main characters changes as dantes gets further and further into hell.

    Just a thought.

Oh man, I think I remember seeing a cartoon or something about video games were the character, on each level, would evolve to a different game play style with better graphics.

Wish I could remember where that was. So many years ago. Almost like it only happened in my imagination. :P

I have to many ideas too. I have learned to focus on one project at a time. It takes a lot of discipline. Thats something I learned to use since I work with GS ;)

If you have too many ideas, feel free to hand over your graphics.* I'm sure I can use them! ;)

Seriously, though. Those look insane! Nice job!

You will make more money just making art for people. Depending on how good you are and judging by your free logos you can make between $20-30 per hour.
