how to work with actors

Ok so the title probably sucks but i wasn't sure how to classify my title. Anyways I am wondering if I have the same actor for multiple levels and its plays a role in all levels...Is it better to have actor x detect all the other actors hitting it and subtracting from a life attribute? Or is it better to have if actor y collides with x subtract 1 life point and if actor z collides with x subtract 1 life? Rather than having x detect every collision...will the game run smoother?
